Mobile Task Force Alpha 17 ("Baker's Dirty Dozen")

There are 12 people in the room, not counting myself and Colonel Baker. The four ladies and eight gentlemen are talking amongst themselves, introducing themselves or reintroducing themselves, as applicable. If I'm remembering correctly, there are seven paratroopers from units as diverse as the 22 SAS, 101st Airborne, and at least one fella from the Division Schnelle Kräfte, German spec-ops. Also in my midst are four infiltration specialists (three of whom being ladies). No idea where they came from. The Foundation, their former employers, and most probably the spooks themselves preferred it that way. Lastly were two historians, one specializing in linguistics and the other specializing in weapons, warfare, and tactics. The weapons guy, Portman, had also worked as a Foundation internal historian and archivist. Knew everything there was to know about the Foundation's activity in the '30s through to the '60s, minus the bits outside his clearance.

The historians are a source of concern for me. The spooks, too, but for different reasons. Portman is closing on his 46th birthday. The linguist, Lauritz, has never picked up a gun in his life and is coming up on 40. They're supposed to teach us how to go where we were going, how to blend in, and we're supposed to teach them everything we know in turn. But both of these men are well outside the age bracket I'd be comfortable instructing. I'm 42 and know damn well that jumping out of perfectly good airplanes fucking hurts. How am I supposed to teach someone twice the age of a typical recruit how to properly perform a HALO jump? How am I supposed to expect them not to break their legs on their first jump? Or keep them from freezing or making a mistake even a kid won't recover from?

Of course, I already expressed this concern to Colonel Baker and he
