Welcome to my fabulous sandbox of various ideas and mind blisters! Please, feel free to read up and leave notes of advice on my upcoming projects — I very much value the teachings of others, especially when it comes to the work I am almost as passionate about as my science. SCIENCE!!
About
I have been envisioning a character of anomalous properties for some while; a protagonist in general,
with an undeniable strangeness about them due to their nature. I would rather start with a story first before writing out a personal file, so here goes nothing!
"Hello Dr. Humfort."
It took a while for the medical doctor to realize the greeting; but when she did, the young woman was greeted with a smile and the gesture to come closer. "Lorem! You're back for your monthly medical screening! Nice to see you again!" The matured woman's smile was comforting to the new arrival, who thankfully took a seat on the patients chair as the Doctor stood up from her stool and began preparing equipment for the check up.
The chair was awfully comfortable, almost disgustingly so, as it sunk back with pads and arm rests as if it were to calm the most frightened and stressed individual into a docile state. She pictured all sorts of terrorized Researchers of the Foundation sitting in this very chair, blurting out their experiences as they were stuffed with drugs to numb the pain. "Getting used to your new name, hopefully?" Dr. Humfort began, ripping her out of her fantasy of this room and the eerily comfy chair. She was obviously trying to ease "Lorem"-as the Foundation had so kindly renamed her-'s clearly worried soul. "Yes, but I guess it will be easier after today… With the amnestics and all…"
She saw the Doctor pause, then look over at her with a light smile, as if she was trying to comfort her. "These won't be true amnestics, Lorem. They are to protect your identity from those who would abuse it, as well as yourself. It's for the best, believe me…" "Did you have to take them?" Lorem asked, watching as Dr. Humfort walked around to her side, gently taking her wrist into her hand as she brought an empty needle to her vein. "I am just going to take a sample here, and I was not conscripted, so no…"
She watched her try to pull up blood, but to no avail. "Hmm… That's awfully strange…" She began, apologizing briefly as she tried again at another location, only to once again fail to achieve any result. Lorem watched her pause, as if contemplating something before lightly laughing it off, walking away as she tried to change the subject, quickly taking some notes on a nearby paper sheet. "Ah, was optional anyway, let's take a look at your eyes!"
Optional? Test's weren't supposed so be "optional". What if she had some sort of disease? Lorem was unsure of this Doctor's methods, but decided to wait it off until she could talk to someone about itwait.that wouldn't be happening after today, would it? Lorem probably wouldn't remember a thing.
Dr. Humfort approached her once more with a small flashlight, shining it briefly into Lorem's eyes for a moment. She looked from eye to eye, and Lorem noted that she would probably be surprised by the colour change from last time.
Her eyes had been brown a few months ago. It seemed that either the stress was getting to her, or Lorem was eating something strange from the cafeteria, for her eyes had begun to pale out week after week. Just this morning, she had noticed that her eyes had become a pale green; as if all the colour and detail save a dark limbal ring had seeped from them completely. She had hoped that the Doctor visits would reveal something about these strange events, and that she could get proper treatment if it turned out to be harmful to her vision, but it seemed that with every visit the Doctors would just scribble down more into their note, mentioning nothing of it to her and brushing it off when it was mentioned. She felt like a secret lab-rat; either that, or it was that they just didn't care.
Watching her expression, Lorem could tell something was up when she saw the Doctor frown lightly after a few seconds of examination, quickly returning to her notes as predicted and proceeding onto the next test overly eagerly. She especially noted her reaction after listening to her heart, and watched as the woman brought her stethoscope repeatedly back as if she did not know what it was she was listening to, her eyebrows furrowing every now and then as she would move the chest-piece to various parts of her chest and back. "Is everything okay?" Lorem asked, and she could tell that her inquiry startled the doctor from her confused trance. "Y-yes. Everything's fine! Nothing to worry about at all!" She blurted out, returning once more to her notes.
Crap. What if she had a heart problem now? "I guess I'd never know!" She complained in her head, rolling her eyes as she watched the doctor furiously scribble words down. "I'll kick the bucket before these guys tell me what's wrong with me."
"Alright, now for the most important part!" Dr. Humfort announced, her voice slightly shaking as she filled up a syringe with a pale yellow liquid from a small container, and attached a long needle to the end of it. "This will assist with accustoming yourself to your new name and the Foundation, I promise." Lorem frowned, thinking that perhaps the woman just didn't want to have to deal with her medical issues at all. "I don't think I am ready for this Doctor.." Lorem tried, but Dr. Humfort simply gave a quick smile before approaching her and taking her wrist up into her hands once more, this time less gently. "I promise, this is for the best. It will help you get through the pain." She said, but Lorem sensed a bit of rush in her voice, as if the Doctor couldn't wait to send her off her way. She pricked her once more with the needle, and it's contents slowly disappeared into Lorem's body.
"When will it take effect?" Lorem asked, and tried to relax in the chair as she prepared to wake up a new person, with no memory of a family, or friends, or anyone she had ever loved and cared about. "Only a few moments." she heard Dr. Humfort reply as Lorem closed her eyes as she waited to fall asleep. She imagined the many people who had sat in this seat before her; who had their entire lives wiped out with a single vile of yellow liquid. Some very evil yellow liquid, she thought, and focused on holding back the tears that piled up behind her eyes. She waited for the inevitable, hoping that her last dreams as the person she was would be kind and comforting.
She waited.
And she waited.
And after a while, she began to become impatient. By now the Doctor had returned to her notebook, as she could hear her scribbling down some information, let out a few sighs, and type at a computer while she too probably was waiting for Lorem to finish up with the procedure as well.
After what seemed to be a good ten to fifteen minutes, Lorem opened her eyes and slowly turned her head to the back of Dr. Humfort, watching as she typed at the computer. "Say, Doctor?" She asked, and her eyes widened when she saw the woman jump and shriek a little, turning quickly to look at her with an expression of shock. "Oh, I'm sorry If I scared you…" She said, smiling uncomfortably as she saw the doctor stare in terror at her. Has the lady lost it? She wondered, but quickly shook the thought out of her head as she continued with her original, intended question. "I'm just wondering if you are sure this will only take a few moments, because I feel awfully awake, and the waiting period for this is terr-"
She stopped when she saw the doctor pick up her notes and run out of the room, calling out for assistance. "Please! Somebody take over, this is just too much!" She heard her say as she ran out into the hall. "The damn girl doesn't even have a pulse!"
