Predatory Elevator

SCP-XXXX

Item #: SCP-XXXX

Object Class: Euclid

Special Containment Procedures: Due to the difficulty to consistently contain SCP-XXXX directly with current methods, containment protocols are focused on preventing SCP-XXXX from jumping to a new location following manifestation.

The primary containment for SCP-XXXX is to be Site XXXX-1. Site XXXX-1 is a three-story building located in the ██████ Desert. The structure houses two (2) elevator shafts that runs to all three floors. (Total shaft height 17m.) One shaft holds a custom elevator MRL1 cab with an average elevation speed of 1m/s2 for SCP-XXXX’s primary containment. This elevator cab is 2m x 2m x 3m and is constructed of steel and aluminium components. The elevator is remotely activated, with no internal controls. All mechanical components are to be accessible for maintenance from outside the cab. Maintenance checks are to be carried out monthly. Any necessary repairs are to be completed immediately by personnel, using spares and materials stored on-site. SCP-XXXX should only be entered by D Class personnel when on the ground floor and remotely locked-down, unless experimentation is being carried out.

The second shaft is be customisable for elevators of varying sizes and hoist mechanisms, suitable to accommodate a second elevator cab in case of containment breach, for the purposes of transferring SCP-XXXX back to primary containment if other attempts at recapture fail. The second shaft is to be empty at all other times.

No elevators of any type are permitted within 10km 20km of Site XXXX-1. A list of all public and private elevators within 200km of Site XXXX-1 is to be maintained onsite and continuously updated.

SCP-XXXX’s containment cab can be removed from the elevator shaft and placed into a specially designed semi-trailer, which can be elevated vertically to function as an elevator shaft in the case of containment breach. At least two semi-trucks capable of pulling the trailer are to maintained on site and fully fuelled, but otherwise have no special requirements.

Revision 10-1 (Following Incident-XXXX-1): Once every three weeks, three (3) live pigs of no less than 50kg (110lbs) weight are to be placed inside SCP-XXXX’s containment cab and the elevator activated and SCP-XXXX allowed to “feed”. The carcasses are to be removed by D-Class personnel and incinerated.

Revision 10-2 (Following Incident-XXXX-3): Once every twelve months, two (2) D Class personnel are to be sedated and entered into SCP-XXXX’s containment cab and the elevator activated as above. Preference will be shown to D Class personnel who have been rendered unable to function, are comatose with no hope of recovery and are scheduled to be terminated: such individuals may be excluded from termination for a period of no longer than four months for this purpose.

Revision 10-3 (Following Experiment-XXXX-1 and Incident-XXXX-6): Any audio and visual records taken from inside SCP-XXXX during manifestation are to be viewed only once, exclusively by D Class personnel who are to transcribe the records. The original records are then to be destroyed.

If SCP-XXXX does not “feed” when supplied with prey after twelve (12) hours, it is considered to have breached containment and the following measures are to be taken.

In case of containment breach, Mobile Task Force Psi-7 ("Home Improvement") is to move SCP-XXXX’s elevator cab to the trailer. Due to the current lack of ability to track SCP-XXXX outside of manifestation, Psi-7 and normal Foundation intelligence gathering sources will monitor for reports of unexplained or accidental deaths in elevator shafts, concentrating on the area within 200km of Site XXXX-1 where SCP-XXXX is most likely to manifest. Undercover Foundation personnel should attempt to close down or disable as many elevators within this area as possible (up to and including sabotage if it can accomplished without danger to civilians), with appropriate cover stories to reduce the potential active elevator cabs for SCP-XXXX to manifest in.

When a manifestation is located, Psi-7 is to drive the elevator truck to the site and erect the temporary elevator shaft. Three (3) live pigs of not less than 50kg (110lbs) weight are to be placed in SCP-XXXX’s containment cab and the elevator activated and run continuously. All other elevators within 20km are to be deactivated, forcibly if necessary, to ensure SCP-XXXX jumps to its containment cab. Once SCP-XXXX has “fed”, and there are no other functioning elevators within 20km, it can be considered recontained. The temporary elevator is can be lowered and the cab is returned to Site XXXX-1 via a pre-determined route, along which all elevators have been deactivated to a distance of 20km.

If SCP-XXXX does not “feed” on the pigs, then the Task Force commander may seek authorisation from Level 4 personnel to use two to four D Class personnel as “bait.”

As a last resort, the elevator cab which was subject to SCP-XXXX’s most recent manifestation is to be extracted at returned to Site XXXX-1 and placed in the second elevator until another verified manifestation of SCP-XXXX appears.

All civilians are to be evacuated to a distance of one mile, citing serious gas leak dangers. All civilians involved in the discovery of the manifestation are to be given Class C amnesiacs and released. Bodies are to be chemically treated to resemble victims of carbon monoxide poisoning and cause of death is to be falsified to that effect.

Description: SCP-XXXX is a transdimenionsal predatory anomaly that manifests in elevators. SCP-XXXX is undetectable by current instrumentation while not actively manifested. The elevator it currently occupies shows no anomalous properties until SCP-XXXX activates. The anomalous effect is manifested when two or more mammals3 of more than 40kg (88lbs) are present in an active elevator. From its recorded patterns of manifestations, SCP-XXXX prefers to target groups of two to four adult humans, but has sometimes targeted larger groups if available. It has a slight preference for targeting elevators that are rising, not descending (██% of recorded instances). SCP-XXXX manifests in powered elevators with enclosed elevator cabs. It seems to prefer elevator cabs of between 8-16m³, but appears to be able to occupy smaller and larger elevators if there are no others within range.

An elevator cab affected by SCP-XXXX slows its rate of ascent or descent to approximately 3% of its unaffected rate. During this time, the elevator cab doors and other entrances such as escape hatches become sealed and inoperable. No conventional method of gaining access to the interior of a manifestation of SCP-XXXX during an active instance have been discovered.4 Disconnecting the elevator cab from its power source causes the cab to stop moving, but does not appear to have any effect on the SCP-XXXX manifestation. When the elevator cab reaches its next destination floor (or after approximate four to five minutes if the cab is stopped from moving), the doors will reopen, and all creatures occupying the elevator cab will be dead. The bodies typically lie in positions of great distress, many having covered their ears or have injured themselves in trying to escape. Autopsy shows no evident cause of death or trauma aside from a slight inflammation of the inner ear. The bodies display no anomalous properties and can be considered safe.

SCP-XXXX is able to “jump” from elevator cab to elevator cab if there is an active (i.e. moving) elevator within range. SCP-XXXX jumps immediately after “feeding” or if the elevator cab it is currently occupying is shut down. If there is no other active elevator within range, SCP-XXXX remains in its current elevator cab. The range for these jumps is typically less than 5-10km and usually to the closest type of elevator cab SCP-XXXX prefers. It has been observed to jump up to 178km (see Incident-XXXX-5) and its maximum range is not known. There is currently no known method to track SCP-XXXX when it jumps between elevator cabs.

Addendum:

Incident-XXXX-1 (██/██/1998): Approximately one month after initial containment, during which time no personnel or animals were allowed to enter SCP-XXXX’s containment cab, SCP-XXXX was discovered to have breached containment, jumping 17 km to the city of █████████ resulting in █ civilian deaths before recapture. Containment procedures revised to allow SCP-XXXX to be “fed” and exclusion radius expanded.

Incident-XXXX-2 (19/08/2000): SCP-XXXX did not “feed” on provided pigs for eight hours. Containment assumed to be breached, breach protocols initiated. Due to an oversight following the assumed breach, power to the containment cab was not cut SCP-XXXX’s containment cab. D8641 and D8647 entered the contaiment cab to retrieve the live pigs. The first two animals were removed without incident. The remaining pig was in a state of extreme distress and refused to leave the cab. Both D Class entered the elevator cab to attempt to manhandle the pig. During the ensuing struggle, the cab doors spontaneously closed, leading to a manifestation of SCP-XXXX and the loss of both personnel. The activation appeared to be a previously-undetected mechanical fault, causing the doors to close when the elevator cab was agitated by the struggle. It is unclear as to whether SCP-XXXX was somehow able to cause this fault or whether it was simply co-incidental.

Incident-XXXX-3 (██/██/2001): SCP-XXXX was discovered to have breached containment since the previous month’s “feeding” and jumped 178km, bypassing many closer elevators. SCP-XXXX became very active, manifesting several times with several hours, resulting in ██ civilian casualties before recontainment. Analysis of containment activity pattern indicated that approximately fourteen months had passed since Incident-XXXX-2 and the last time it had “fed” on a human. Containment protocols revised.
