The Bronze Sphere

Item #: SCP-3048

Object Class: Safe

Special Containment Procedures: SCP-3048 is contained within a concrete holding chamber 20 metres square and 10 metres high in order to provide ample room for testing. The facility is located at the bottom of a reclaimed quarry lake in central ████████. Access to the surface is possible through a freight elevator leading to what appears to be an abandoned communications shack.

Due to the nature of the object, internal security may be kept at a minimum, acting only as a precaution should the object display any unusual activity. A small security force will remain in the shack on the surface as a deterrent to curious civilians.

Description: SCP-3048 is an approximately one metre diameter sphere composed of a yet unknown material, appearing to be bronze at a glance. The sphere is perfectly smooth to the touch, and consistently maintains a temperature of 13 degrees Celsius.

SCP-3048 is completely immovable, permanently affixed to its position relative to the earth. Any attempts to move SCP-3048 result in the absolute destruction of the tool or creature being used. Experiments have shown that SCP-3048 is safe to touch as long as the person touching it is not attempting to move the object. It is currently unknown if this is a purely defensive mechanism.

SCP-3048 was discovered by the crew operating the strip mine at the time on ████ ██, 19██ when the bucket of their digger made contact with the sphere that was encased in rock at this point. The bucket almost immediately shattered violently, disabling the digger and killing three workers on the ground, as well as the operator. The Foundation was quickly notified, with the quarry being shut down and flooded soon after construction of the containment facility was completed.

Addendum 3048-1: On site research team has suggested that given the unusual location of SCP-3048, there may be other spheres encased in the surrounding rock, or at least related structures. However, until the destructive nature of the object is more fully understood, further excavation of the quarry walls will not be permitted at this time.

TEST LOG SCP-3048, SECTION 1

SUBJECT: D-5090, 29 year old white female
ASSIGNED TEST: Movement by hand
TEST RESULTS: Subject instructed to attempt to touch the object with her bare hands. This went without incident, even with some movement over the sphere. However, when instructed to give the sphere a light shove, D-5090 promptly exploded. Request placed for additional janitorial supplies on site.

SUBJECT: D-4685, 34 year old white male
ASSIGNED TEST: Movement via vehicle
TEST RESULTS: Subject placed in a small Bobcat bucket loader, instructed to attempt to move the object. Immediately upon contact with SCP-3048, the bucket shattered with no visible damage to the SCP. Additionally, despite making no actual contact with the sphere, D-4685 also exploded.

SUBJECT: D-6243, 54 year old hispanic male
ASSIGNED TEST: Indirect movement via vehicle
TEST RESULTS: Subject placed in a second Bobcat bucket loader, this time attached to a cable tied around SCP-3048. Upon acceleration of the vehicle, the cable began to rip apart resulting in a chain reaction that caused the bucket loader to explode. D-6243 was killed in the explosion.

SUBJECT: None
ASSIGNED TEST: Indirect movement, no personnel involvement
TEST RESULTS: Small rocket affixed to SCP-3048, activated via a timer set to go off at a random point in a ten minute window after the start of the test. Upon ignition of the rocket, acting project lead Dr. [REDACTED], while in the confines of the observation chamber, [DATA EXPUNGED]. Additionally, the floor beneath SCP-3048 has started cracking. Calculations have shown that the explosion of the rocket was not forceful enough to cause these. Further testing is not recommended at this time.
