SCP-XXXX before testing (see addendum A)

Special Containment Procedures: SCP-XXXX is to be kept in a secure storage locker, folded neatly, in Site-19. Access to the object is restricted to level 3 authorization, for research use only. Test subjects (SCP-XXXX-1) must be screened, prior to authorization, for PTSD or similar trauma that may increase the likelihood of nightmares. Subjects must be cleared by two (2) level 2 psychiatric staff or one (1) level 3 psychiatrist to be eligible for testing. Confirmation of eligibility for all proposed test subjects and a completed briefing in emergency protocol, aka “safewords”¹, are to be submitted in writing with any request to study the effects of SCP-XXXX.

Description: SCP-XXXX is a quilt-fashion pillow case patterned with primarily red and/or blue striped patches. It is slightly larger than the average pillow case, leaving it loose on most pillows. When a fatigued subject rests their head on SCP-XXXX, thus designated SCP-XXXX-1, they experience an accelerated onset of drowsiness normally consistent with falling asleep. After approximately two minutes, SCP-XXXX-1 enters the early stages of sleep, NREM sleep. Approximately four minutes later (six in total), SCP-XXXX-1 will enter REM sleep, and proceeds to dream. Standard one hour and thirty minute sleep cycles are replaced with one eight hour REM sequence. SCP-XXXX-1 must be removed from SCP-XXXX and harshly stimulated if they are to be woken from this state before the eight hours are completed.

Instances of SCP-XXXX-1 report vivid recollection of their dreams as well as being aware that they were dreaming at the time. Further tests on subjects prone to lucid dreaming confirm that instances of SCP-XXXX-1 experience the self-awareness typical of lucid dreaming. However, tests with lucid-sensitive subjects have concluded that SCP-XXXX-1 is in no way in control of their dream, and simply experience an average dream with lucid clarity.

Addendum A

Test #█ - ██/██/████

Subject: D-1957
Procedure: Subject is to sleep on SCP-XXXX until they wake up or after a maximum of two days, then interviewed on their experience.
Results: Subject slept for approximately eight hours and twenty one minutes. Subject was incoherent and demonstrated poor motor control upon waking up, but quickly regained control.
Analysis: Subject described a scenario in their dream that should have woken him up due to a muscle reflex. The additional twenty one minutes after eight hours had passed was also irregular.

Interviewer: Alright, how are you feeling?

Subject: Well uh, I definitely needed the extra 5 minutes, but I think I’m good now.

Interviewer: Could you explain?

Subject: I just felt, like, fatigued or something… no, not that… like, when you’re coming out of tunnel vision. Like when you drive for a long time? Yeah, not fatigued.

Interviewer: Okay, ‘tunnel vision’. So what happened in your dream?

Subject: Ehh, it was a long-ass dream, *shakes head* all weird ‘dream stuff’ too, I can’t remember everything.

Interviewer: Was it not a lucid dream?

Subject: No it was. Just like, it felt like at least two days in there, and it was full of crazy dream stuff, normal stuff.

Interviewer: Very well, anything you remember in particular?

Subject: Uh, hm, okay I got one. I was playing baseball, but like, as a kid, like a little league, which is weird because I never did that in real life. And the pitcher was an asshole. You know, like how you just, understand things in your dreams without being told? So yeah, and he fuckin’ threw the ball right at my face, and I remember it coming straight at me. Like, normally shit like that makes you wake up right before it hits you, and I thought I did wake up, but then I realized I was just flat on my back bleeding all over my uniform, and my nose fucking hurt like hell. I’ve had a broken nose before, so, yeah shit hurt. It stayed broken for a long ass time, for a couple hours I think until a uh, um, bird… doctor… thing, patched it up.

Closing Statement: It is worth noting that no physical injuries were reported from D-1957’s post-test examination. However, D-1957 has reported increased memory recall, memorization, energy, and alertness since his test with SCP-XXXX. Further testing for therapeutic application is awaiting authorization.

Addendum B

Perhaps the only real anomalous effect SCP-XXXX has is that it it reinforces and sustains the REM sleep state. After all, instances of SCP-XXXX-1 achieve REM sleep in less time than the average adult reaches even the earliest stages of sleep. I submit that the lucid experience is to be expected under those circumstances. But how does SCP-XXXX keep the subject trapped in REM sleep, despite what typically causes violent muscle-reflex reactions that so often abort the dreamer from the dream? This theory may also explain why the subject, despite lucid awareness, is uninfluential to the course of the dream. -Dr. █████ ████

Addendum C

Test A - ██/█/████

Subject: D-2184 is a security officer at site-19.
Procedure: Subject is to sleep on SCP-XXXX for one 8 hour period while brain activity is monitored, and be interviewed on their experience.
Results: MRI detects chaotic brain patterns in SCP-XXXX-1 several minutes after achieving REM sleep. After approximately 22 minutes of REM sleep, subject goes into cardiac arrest and is removed from SCP-XXXX. D-2184 is subsequently resuscitated at site infirmary.
Analysis: It has come to light that D-2184 was reassigned to a security detail for SCP-████ after surviving a breach with SCP-682 and being administered a class B amnesiac. Despite no memory of the trauma, D-2184 reports that he has had trouble sleeping for “several weeks at least”, which is consistent with his amnesiac history to most likely mean the full extent of his current memory.
