SCP - XXXX while containment was under construction

Item #: SCP-XXXX

Object Class: Euclid

Special Containment Procedures: SCP-XXXX is immobile, and is held in Observation Post XXXX, in a containment chamber built around it, as no method for transporting it has been discovered. Access is restricted to Level 2 clearance and above.

Description: SCP-XXXX is a spherical field of effect measuring 7 meters in radius and positioned 0.5 meters over the floor. When an object is placed in this field, it physically changes to its 'ideal' state. In this context, 'ideal' refers to the state that the first observer finds most visually pleasing. This change immediately reverts once the object is removed from the field. Of note is that if an observer stands within the field of effect, they observe their surroundings as being affected by the object.

However, standing within the field of effect has consequences, as seen in Test XXXX-02 A. When an observer is within the field, and a camera is recording from inside the field, the observer is transported to an alternate plane of reality. This dimension appears to be built off of memories, and wholly dependent upon observation. The father an observer travels, the more changes are noted between the alternate reality and our own.

Objects can be brought back through the field from this alternate reality, and such objects are immune to the field's effects. Such objects have occasionally displayed anomalous properties. Certain objects in the plane recur at specific locations, and can be used for consistent navigation. However, care must be taken during exploration, as another person observing the field while someone is inside will cause the dimension to violently shift, likely killing or stranding the original observer. If such an event happens, or the recording device stops recording while an observer is inside, they are to be considered lost. No method of reacquiring subjects after this point have been found.

Documents have been recovered from the alternate plane, which describe a technologically advanced civilization, evidently with the ability to create and use anomalous objects. Such documents have also outlined specific details of said objects, are are valuable items for retrieval. Discovering the cause of the civilization's extinction is of high priority, as it appears to have been caused by misuse of an anomalous object, which may still be functional.

It is worth noting that because taste differs between observers, the concept of 'ideal' varies as well, leading to multiple subjects obtaining different results from the same item, so long as they do not view it at the same time. If a group views a scene at the same time, all observers are taken account for, the field changing the object to fit the preferences of all observers simultaneously. As well, if two groups view the same scene at different times, the number of similar qualities between the changes will increase proportionally to the population of the group. (See Test XXXX-01 D for more details on this property.)

When viewed by a live camera, it has been determined that the effects of the object depend on the subject watching the feed. Experimentation with a recording of the object while there were no subjects, viewed 24 hours after recording, resulted in the object having no effect upon the containment chamber.

Addendum XXXX-01: Group Observation Experiment:
Test XXXX-01 A - ████/██/18

Subjects: Seven (7) D-Class personnel.

Objects Viewed: A wooden table holding assorted office supplies, in various states of disrepair.

Results: All agreed that the supplies looked “much better”, and that the table seemed “freshly oiled”.

Analysis: The observers agreed on the attractiveness of the items unanimously. All subjects saw same objects.

Test XXXX-01 B - ████/██/18

Subjects: The seven (7) D-Class personnel from Test A.

Objects Viewed: A wooden table holding an array of empty, broken, or dusty cups.

Results: Subjects stated that the cups were “filled with beer”, based both on the appearance of the liquid, and the faint smell of hops present. All subjects agreed upon the descriptions of the objects.

Analysis: The object is capable of actions beyond repair, including determining use for objects.

Test XXXX-01 C - ████/██/18

Subjects: The seven (7) D-Class personnel from Test A.

Objects Viewed: A wooden table holding ten (10) 30cm meter high pillars of sculptor’s clay.

Results: Personnel stated that there were ten (10) fired clay sculptures of the table, which all agreed were “amazing”. After viewing, each of the subjects were interviewed individually, and were asked to describe the sculptures. The descriptions matched each of the other subject's descriptions with near complete accuracy, factoring in eyewitness unreliability.

Analysis: The object is capable of shifting an item from raw material to a finished product.

Test XXXX-01 D - ████/██/18

Subjects: A separate set of five (5) D-Class personnel.

Objects Viewed: A wooden table holding ten (10) 30cm meter high pillars of sculptor’s clay.

Results: Personnel stated that there were ten (10) fired clay sculptures of the table, described as "beautiful". After being individually interviewed, the descriptions matched with the others from test D, but not from C, with the exception of a "green dragon" that had appeared in both tests.

Analysis: Different groups will see their own images, apparently tailored to what the subjects appreciate, though overlaps may occur.

Test XXXX-01 E - ████/██/18

Subjects: One (1) Level 2 Research Assistant.

Objects Viewed: A wooden table holding one (1) 30cm meter high pillars of sculptor’s clay, placed inside of the sphere.

Results: Subject noted a fired clay statue of an angel, which he described as 'extremely detailed'. The assistant then was told to enter the field and pick up the sculpture. Of note is that, within the field, the subject appeared to be about 0.2 m taller, with well-defined features. The subject stumbled upon entering the field, stating that the 'floor sank down suddenly', likely a reaction to the sudden change in height.

The subject picked up the sculpture without too much difficulty, though noting it was heavier than the original pillar, and carried it out. The subject then noted that the room around him had also changed. Upon leaving the field, both the clay and the subject revert to their previous forms, the subject again noting a sudden shift. The current run of tests was ended.

Analysis: Objects and subjects within the field physically change, apparently without regard to Conservation of Mass and Energy. This effect is instantaneous, and occurs once the object or subject has been fully 'immersed' in the field. Pain is not experienced during the shift. Objects revert back to their normal state as soon as any part of it leaves the field, based only on the original structure of the object (The statue's 'wings' were observed to have left the field momentarily, before the clay reverted). While within the field, subjects perceive the area outside of the field as having shifted, but no physical changes are noted.

Addendum XXXX-02: Recording Device Experiment:
Test XXXX-02 A - ████/██/20

Subjects: One (1) Level 2 Research Assistant.

Objects Used: One (1) video camera, with tripod.

Results: The camera was placed within the field, then observed by the subject. Subject noted a few minor changes in the camera that made it appear to be of higher quality. The camera was then activated, and began recording. The video feed showed that the containment cell had minor changes, such as lighting and state of maintenance. Subject entered the field to manually change the zoom setting of the camera, before attempting to exit. Subject ceased to be visible once he crossed the edge of the field of effect.

The video feed showed the subject walking in a straight line, along the room, before realizing that he had already left the boundary of the field, and yet the room had not reverted. He quickly returned to the camera, coming back into view once inside the field, where he expressed distress at being unable to escape the effect. After repeated attempts to leave the field, subject turned off the recording device and once more walked out. Upon turning off the camera, the subject was fully able to cross the boundary without incident. Testing was concluded.

Analysis: When the interior of the field is being observed, attempts to leave the field fail, leaving the subject 'trapped' within the other plane, until the observation ceases. Due to the field's reaction to sentient observation, this effect only occurs with recording devices.

Addendum XXXX-03: Extra-dimensional Exploration Experiment:
Test XXXX-03 A - ████/██/20

Subjects: One (1) D-Class personnel.

Objects Used: One (1) video camera, with tripod. One (1) Dedicated audio recording device, attached to camera. One (1) set of exploration headgear, with camera and microphone. Two hundred fifty (250) meters of cable for wired data transfer from camera.

Results: The camera was placed within the field and observed, resulting in a number of minor changes. Subject entered field, then expressed distress upon seeing the containment cell shift. Subject was directed to walk away from the camera and describe what he observed. Data from the subject's camera was corrupted and inconsistent, the problem soon discovered to be related to the field's effect on the cable.

Wireless communications capability of the head-mounted camera and microphone was determined to function without interference from the field. The cable was returned to containment, and recordings sent wirelessly. This method of testing was used for all successive tests. Subject's descriptions accurately reflected the recorded scenes, and as such, were omitted.

The subject walked around the room, examining the changes made, including large windows, a coffee machine, and many other items that, while useful, had no place in a containment cell. The subject then exited the containment cell, the lock evidently missing, before attempting to return to the D-Class quarters. However, the subject soon missed a turn within a hallway, deviating from his path without noticing.

More extreme changes began to be noted past this point, including moving walkways, a complete deviation from site layout, and vending machines that advertised free food and drink. Subject approached one such vending machine, and obtained a can of beer. Of note is that while the can was from an existing brand, the similarity was only superficial, later analysis noting incorrect or missing information along the nutritional contents and other minor details.

Subject, after minor discussion, stowed the can instead of drinking it, and continued on. Changes grew more extreme as exploration progressed, often directly targeting subject's psychological profile and personal history. Subject first displayed excitement at the changes, but quickly grew aware of the fact that there were no other living beings present in his exploration.

Areas began to hold no resemblance at all to Foundation architecture, before the subject approached a large stone arch, the interior space of the arch filled by a thin, smooth sheet of clear fluid. After coercion, subject passed through the arch, the liquid parting itself as he approached, the sheet remaining approximately 3 cm away from subject's skin at all times. The subject then arrived at what he described as (and was later determined to be), his former residence in childhood.

Subject expressed fondness at the sight, saying that everything was exactly the same, before growing more distressed as he stated that the lack of other people was becoming worrying. Subject was coerced to continue, and, upon entering the kitchen, cried out in fear.

A middle-aged woman, corresponding to appearances of subject's mother, was standing at the counter, apparently in the middle of making a sandwich. Of note is that Subject's mother died █ years previously. Subject approached the facsimile of his mother after coercion, before realizing that it was only a statue of his mother, made of painted stone. Subject expressed distress and quickly returned to containment without incident, the camera being shut off and subject reacquired into custody. Of note is that the can of beer did not 'revert' as in other tests, seeming to be permanent.

Analysis: So long as the original field of effect is observed by a recording device, the subject may explore the other dimension freely. This plane is heavily based upon the memories of the subject, and, upon entering unfamiliar areas, quickly introduces changes. Living beings other than the subject either do not exist, or are not observable. The plane is not capable of creating living beings, but will attempt to reproduce their appearance through other means.

Accuracy of objects created relies upon subject's memory, he did not hold strong memories of the 'fine print' on the can of beer, which was the likely cause of the inaccuracies there. Analysis of drink revealed that though superficially similar to the brand's product, its ingredients were slightly off in quantity, with several vitamins completely missing, presumably because the subject was not aware that they were in the beverage. After analysis, part of the liquid was given to the subject, who demonstrated no ill effects before his 30-day termination.

Test XXXX-03 B - ████/██/20

Subjects: One (1) D-Class personnel, different than from test A.

Objects Used: One (1) video camera, with tripod. One (1) Dedicated audio recording device, attached to camera. One (1) set of exploration headgear, with camera and microphone. One (1) flashlight.

Results: The camera was placed within the field and observed, the subject soon entering the field, and resultant plane. Recordings showed similar changes as from Test XXXX-03 A, though, as expected, shifted to closer match the current subject's psyche. Exploration went on for longer than in the previous test, with expected increase in intensity of shifts.

Of note is that the current subject also came across the arch that subject A had encountered and used, analysis of the recordings showing that, to any measurable degree, they were the same object. As well, they were in approximately the same location (though the path was markedly different than from Test XXXX-03 A).

Upon exiting the door, subject found himself outside, in a thick forest. Subject at first expressed surprise and enjoyment, then quickly grew nervous, stating that he heard "absolutely no sounds" from the forest. After a few minutes of wandering, it became clear that, despite the vibrant appearance of the forest, no living beings other than the subject were present.

At first, it was assumed that the dimension was capable of recreating plant life, however, as the subject attempted to push a low-hanging branch out of the way, he reacted with surprise when it snapped suddenly, revealing that it was, in fact, made of painted grey stone. Subject quickly grew distressed, asking to return, but was coerced into continuing.

After several minutes of following a beaten-dirt path, subject began to notice small woodland creatures, standing perfectly still in various positions along the forest. Cursory examinations showed them to be statues as well, further distressing the subject. All such statues were crafted of a smooth grey stone, with a thin layer of paint giving the replicas realistic features and textures. A sample was taken of one of the sculptures, specifically a squirrel.

Subject approached a large structure, composed of a material resembling concrete in texture, but a dull, faded green in colour. Structure was approximately 30m in height, with five walls and a roof, forming a regular pentagonal prism. No entrance or windows were found in the structure, and the subject soon continued along the forest path after examining the structure.

The forest soon gave way to a tall mountain, with a well-maintained path, including carved steps along the steeper portions. Subject followed the path for several minutes, before looking over the forest, expressing slight nervousness. The sight from the higher elevation showed the forest continuing to the horizon, as well as the building that the subject had entered the forest from, though it was noticeably larger than the actual observation post, the floor plan clearly incorrect.

Subject explained that his distress was due to the "utter stillness" of the environment, and once more asked to return. The request was denied, and the subject continued along the mountain path. After 3 minutes, subject approached a large natural cave, the sound of running water audible from the entrance.

Subject was instructed to activate his flashlight and enter the cavern. After only a few meters in, large crystal formations were immediately visible, many resembling natural crystals that existed on earth, with a few exceptions, such as a mineral that showed similarity to quartz, but built upon tetragonal symmetry rather than trigonal. A small sample was taken of the unknown crystal.

Continuing for seven more minutes, subject then came to a natural skylight in the cave, the hole in the ceiling also letting in a heavy stream of water, creating a natural waterfall within the cave. Directly under the waterfall was a pillar of rock, with a shaped convex top, angled in such a way as to cause the water to strike the top and course out in an arc and into a small stream approximately 1.2 meters from the base of the pillar.

Due to the position of the skylight, this created a strong rainbow effect, which the subject observed for half a minute before continuing. Three minutes, the subject exited the cave, facing the forest. The path then ended in a stone ledge overlooking a sharp drop, approximately 20 m in height.

On the edge of the platform was a stone statue of a gargoyle-like figure. Subject once more asserted that he had never seen it before, displaying nervousness. The statue's oversized mouth held a glossy black dodecahedron. Subject was instructed to remove it, and, after coercion, did so, reporting little difficulty in removing it.

Subject described the object as "unusually heavy", but expressed only slight difficulty in carrying it. Subject was then instructed to return. Twenty minutes after subject began the return trip, maintenance staff entered the room mistakenly, and accidentally observed the camera. Recordings from the subject's camera show a bright flash erupting from the approximate location of the 'entrance' to the plane, followed by a rapid disintegration of all matter, before data ceased to be sent.

Analysis: No living being is created within the dimension, including vegetation. Superficial replicas of life are often created shortly after subject expresses distress in the lack of other beings. Due to the unfortunate accident with the additional observer, no samples were able to be retrieved. Maintenance staff member was reprimanded for not checking the testing schedule of the cell. Additional precautions were taken for the next test.

Test XXXX-03 C - ████/██/20

Subjects: One (1) Level 2 Research Assistant.

Objects Used: One (1) video camera, with tripod. One (1) audio recording device, attached to camera. One (1) set of exploration headgear, with camera and microphone. One (1) flashlight. One (1) survival kit, including first aid, a compass, a GPS, food for three days, and a water filtration system rated for one week of use. One (1) research sample collection kit, including airtight plastic sacks for samples, a chisel, a small shovel, and ten (10) 15ml sealable containers for liquid samples. Twenty (20) 0.3 meter fluorescent orange stakes for path marking.

Results: Subject set up experiment as in previous tests, then began exploration. As soon as subject entered the field, GPS signal was lost. After twenty minutes, subject came across the stone arch seen in Test XXXX-03 A and Test XXXX-03 B, again in the same location. The door opened into a small pier on a large sea or ocean, the water's edge meeting the horizon.

A single-person electricity-powered watercraft was docked at the pier by polished iron chains. Subject explored around the pier and found that sharp cliffs formed a natural wall around the beach, the only way forward being across the water. Subject took a brief pause to obtain a sample of the seawater and seal it.

Admitting to enjoying nautical travels, the subject then cautiously entered the watercraft, examining it, before declared it to be a ███████-brand speedboat. Patches of discolouration, points of advanced wear, and superficial scratches made the craft appear to be an exact replica of subject's first such craft. Subject planted a ground marker in front of the wooden door, then examined the docking chain.

The chain was attached to the boat by a thick steel lock with a shallow, thin groove instead of a keyhole. After consideration, subject used the chisel as a 'key', causing the lock to snap open and release the craft. Expressing surprise that the groove perfectly fit the chisel, the subject then activated the craft and slowly proceeded across the water.

After assessing the craft's capabilities, the subject increased velocity, keeping on a bearing that measured as true north on the compass. After ten minutes of travel along water, subject began to decrease speed, reporting seeing a large rock. Upon reaching the object, it was discovered to be the structure found in Test XXXX-03 B. Subject noted that the building extended into the water, past the point of visibility.

The subject examined the underwater portion of the structure and determined that there was an open entrance 1 m below the surface. Storing all important, water-prone equipment on the craft, subject then entered the sea and submerged to enter the structure. Note that while the camera was still functioning due to waterproofing, the wireless connectivity cut out once the subject passed through the entrance. As such, subject had no commands from research staff to carry out, and all decisions were made by the subject alone.

Subject entered a single, large, unlit room, and immediately used his flashlight. The room appeared to have been a shelter of some sort, large piles of empty food containers scattered about, and threadbare blankets strewn across the floor. No person or body was visible. Among the various objects in the room was a large desk, with papers dotting its surface. The documents appeared to vary between typed and written. The documents were recorded by the camera, and their full texts are available in Addendum XXXX – 04.

Subject examined room for 2 more minutes before returning, unable to find a worthwhile object for recovery that would not be destroyed by the water. After exiting, Subject reconnected with the research team and gave them time to examine the saved recordings, before returning to the craft.

Subject continued along the current bearing, before coming across a much larger ship, resembling the ████████████ brand of luxury yacht. Subject expressed surprise, stating that he had been looking into chartering the same model of yacht some time in the future, before docking at the stern of the boat and ascending a small metal ladder embedded into the structure.

After wandering along the exterior of the craft, documenting details, subject then entered the cabin. On the counter of the kitchen area was a large collection of neatly organized dried foods, estimated to be over ██ kilograms in total. The subject then acquired a sample of water from the craft's sink. Subject then continued along the cabin, exploring the rooms and finding each one fully furnished and in pristine condition.

Withing the engine compartment, the fuel gauge indicated that ███ gallons of diesel fuel were in storage, ███% of the maximum capacity for a yacht that size. Subject entered the last room of the ship after 38 minutes of exploration. The final room of the ship was a glass-bottom observation chamber, the observation lights currently on, casting beams of light into the ocean, with no marine life or sea floor visible. Subject expressed slight distress at this, stating that he felt like he was "looking into an endless void".

The subject then returned to the navigation room and set a bearing 35 degrees "east" of his original path, citing that if the gargoyle statue were a recurring object, it would be in that area.

As subject expected, only four minutes later, subject noted a large pillar rising approximately 20 m above sea level, the gargoyle statue from Test XXXX-03 B visible at the top. Approaching the pillar, subject dropped anchor and examined it from the speedboat, soon finding a path into the structure.

After a short climb, subject reached the top, then examined the statue. The subject reported the mouth as empty, then placed one of the fluorescent markers within the mouth. Subject then returned to the larger watercraft.

The subject soon returned to the pier, passing by the pedestal and blue orb along the way. The subject attempted to explore the landmass, and, after 2 hours 43 minutes, found a suitable beach. After anchoring, subject examined the area, finding that the beach led to a single large cave. The subject then proceeded to explore the cave, with use of the flashlight.

As before, crystal formations were quickly prevalent, however, they were not similar to those noted in Test XXXX-03 B, and the layout of the cave was changed, suggesting that the cave seen in Test XXXX-03 B is not a recurring object. Subject described the cave as strangely cold, considering the warmth of the outside air.

Subject took samples of four (4) crystal formations, specifically quartz, gypsum, anthodite, and an unknown type of crystal, a dull red crystal with a cubic system. Later analysis proved it to not be a new crystal, but rather a red coloured sample of sphalerite. After obtaining samples, subject continued exploring the cave, eventually coming to a wide waterfall. Taking a sample of the cave water, subject then looked for a continuation of the path, finding it to be a dead end. During the search, subject examined the runoff of the waterfall, and found an unusual object.

The object found resembled a small yellow egg, and appeared to be embedded within the stone under the runoff. The subject attempted to use the chisel to chip away the stone around it, but the water caused the tool to slip, and shatter the object. Later analysis of the recording showed the object shattering, then dispersing into a fine powder and dissolving into the water. 4 seconds later, the egg-like object reappeared in its original location. Startled, subject began making observations about the object, then struck it again.

As before, the object dissolved, giving the subject time to place the chisel inside the groove that held it. The egg rematerialized, resting against the chisel, instead of in the original hole. Subject then took the object, bagging it as a sample. Citing potential to accidentally shatter the object again and having to reacquire it, subject then returned to containment cell immediately. Before docking at the pier, subject was told to bring a sample of one of the granola bars found in the yacht. Subject and samples were retrieved without incident, and testing was concluded.

Analysis: Specific landmarks in the connected plane recur at the same locations, often not fitting the 'theme' of the plane. Analysis of sample of the sea water revealed that it had the same minerals as sea water, but lacked the microbial life found in actual sea water. Analysis of the water sample from the sink was nearly identical to filtered water, only slight differences in mineral content. Analysis of crystals showed them to be identical to those found outside the plane.

Analysis of the egg showed it to be incredibly brittle, composed only of a thin, calcium-based shell. Upon any puncture to the shell, it immediately collapses into a fine powder, then reconstitutes directly under the field. The powder lasts only until the egg re-materializes, presumably used to recreate it. If the location it reappears at is occupied, it will appear on the edge of the blocking object, typically along the eastern side. Aside from the regeneration, the egg has shown no further anomalous properties.

Subject professed no mineralogy experience, so the probability of the crystals being built from memories of native crystals is low. Sample of the granola bar showed it to be functionally identical to ██████ - brand granola bars, except it wholly lacked preservatives, likely due to the lack of microbial life in the plane. Upon review of recordings, a map was constructed, showing the approximate locations of the landmarks, and the distances between them.
