SCP-???? The Lingering Scent

Object Class: Safe

Special Containment Procedures: SCP-???? is to be contained in a plain 5m x 5m x 3m room atop a small table. It is to remain inside of a secure box unless testing is scheduled. In the event testing is scheduled, the box is to be opened and the chamber ventilated in order to facilitate dissipation of lingering hallucinogenic gases, with SCP-???? remaining out of sight until testing begins.

Description: SCP-???? is a plain, unmarked vial, roughly large enough to contain 50 mL of any substance.(Possibly mason jar? Possibly bottle beaker?) When not in the vicinity of any living being, the vial contains a clear, highly viscous fluid. This fluid will not spill if the vial is inverted using mechanical means, and no means to seal the vial have been found due to the mouth's aperture changing in size when capping is attempted. This viscous fluid seems to constantly release a gas composed primarily of 5-MeO-DMT1, never exceeding a certain saturation point in the surrounding air when at rest.

When a human approaches SCP-????, the contents of the vial will change color to whatever would most please the individual’s eye, with the consistency changing to a more fluid state in order to perpetuate the appealing nature. In the event that the subject lifts SCP-???? to inhale the scent of the contents, a first set of anomalous behaviors begin.

Upon inhalation, the fluid within SCP-???? will revert to the clear, viscous state and begin exuding a "blissful aroma" in copious amounts, the concentration of hallucinogenic compounds within the air increasing before causing catatonia. Once the subject has lost consciousness, the fluid within the vial will begin to increase in volume before engulfing the subject, slowly dissolving any organic material before retreating to its original volume and returning to the vial.

In the event the subject resists, within 2 minutes the observer will begin experiencing a scent that has a negative connotation in their mind, hereby described as the "fear odor". The scent will begin filling the immediate vicinity, growing in area up to a maximum of [REDACTED] and causing stress, panic, and a sense of complete dissociation with the world in the affected subject until they are either out of SCP-????'s area of influence or have been paralyzed by fear. In the event paralysis occurs, SCP-???? proceeds much like in the event the subject willingly inhaled the aroma.

Other anomalous properties have been observed in a case by case basis (See Testing Log, Resistance and Testing Log, Acceptance for results). Both varieties of scent will linger for up to half an hour, and while one scent is in the air any further subjects will not find themselves affected by SCP-????. Subjects exposed to SCP-???? report that the negative scents are consistently those that seem to “bend the mind near the breaking point”, while those who experienced the positive scents describe them as "warm and comforting".

Testing Log, Resistance

12/23/20XX
Tester: Dr. ????
Subject: D-4237
Color of ????: Violet
Fear Odor: Freshly unrolled carpeting
Anomalous properties: None seen. Subject calms within one hour with exposure to non-contaminated air.

12/29/20XX
Tester: Dr. ????
Subject: D-18122
Color of SCP-????: Tan
Fear Odor: Wet canine, longhair
Anomalous properties: Subject complained of feeling damp and unusually heavy, as though coated in the same wet fur that was reported as the negative odor. Effects persisted for half an hour.
Notes: Could SCP-???? manifest other psychological effects in order to amplify the impact of the negative odor? Subject did say that while it did smell wrong, it wasn’t until the feelings of dampness and extra weight started that they began to panic, so perhaps in the event a subject has no overwhelming ties it instead chooses to use the hallucinogenic properties to manifest physical sensations as well.

Testing Logs, Acceptance

Tester: Dr. ????
Subject: D-7169
Color of ????: Red
Positive Scent: Copper
Anomalous properties: Subject displayed an increase in aggression after exposure to the positive scent that remained even after the subject was removed from SCP-????’s area of effect. Said aggressive tendencies persisted for two hours after testing was concluded.
Note: It seems that depending on the connotations surrounding the positive scent, repressed personality traits from when the scent was linked to positive emotions may surface. An analysis of D-7169’s records indicated deep depression prior to his incarceration, alleviated by, in his own words, [DATA EXPUNGED]

Original Description: SCP-???? is a plain, unmarked vial, roughly large enough to contain 50 mL of any substance. When not in the vicinity of any living being, the vial contains a clear, highly-viscous fluid. This fluid will not spill if the vial is inverted using mechanical means, and no means to seal the vial have been found due to the mouth's aperture changing in size upon capping. This viscous fluid seems to release a gas composed primarily of 5-MeO-DMT, never exceeding a certain saturation point in the surrounding air.

When a human approaches SCP-????, the contents of the vial will change color to whatever would most please the individual’s eye, with the consistency changing to a more fluid state in order to perpetuate the appealing nature. The observer will find themselves compelled to lift the vial, imagining it to contain a high-quality perfume that they wish to smell.

Upon smelling, the observer will find themselves at first overwhelmed with a feeling of euphoria and as though their cares are being relieved in one fell swoop as what seems to be a scent connected to feelings of happiness washes over them. Within 2 minutes, however, the observer will begin experiencing a scent that has a negative connotation in their mind, and immediately will throw the vial down. Upon doing so, the scent will begin filling the immediate vicinity, causing stress, panic, and a sense of complete dissociation with the world in the affected subject until they are out of SCP-????'s area of influence. Other anomalous properties have been observed in a case by case basis (See Testing Logs for anomalous events). The scent will linger for up to half an hour, and while one scent is in the air any further subjects will not find themselves affected by SCP-????. Subjects exposed to SCP-???? report that the negative scents are consistently those that seem to “bend the mind near the breaking point”.
