SCP XXXX: The Protective Sandbox

Item #: XXXX

Object Class: Safe

Special Containment Procedures: SCP 2903 is held in the creature containment wing of Site 19, and stored in the manner in which it was originally found. As individual specimins are continuously dying off and being eaten by those that remain, no feeding schedule is necessary. Experimentation with SCP 2903 requires permission from 2 level 3 personnel. No D-Class with any history of child abuse, pedophelia, etc, are to be assigned to SCP XXXX.

SCP XXXX is a colony of roughly spherical, hermaphrodic, omnivorous arthropods. To the naked eye, adult specimins resemble grains of sand, a charactersitic that is currently hypothesised to serve as a camoflauge mechanism. Eggs, which gestate for three days and hatch six hours after being laid, and juviniles, which take 17 hours after hatching to fully develop, are microscopic. SCP XXXX die off and reproduce at sufficient rates to maintain a stable population sans any outside interference. Groups of adult SCP XXXX specimins have demonstrated the ability to arrange themselves into a variety of forms, apparently favoring sand castles and other sand sculptures commonly made by young children, linking together with their legs to maintain structural cohesion. If left to its' own devices for longer than 1 hour, SCP XXXX will begin doing so of its' own accord. The colony has also been observed to respond to external stimuli and react accordingly. This includes mimicking any shape envisioned by a human aged 12 years or less within approximately 1 meter of the nearest individual specimin. When it or anyone aged 12 years or less within 30 meters of the nearest individual specimin is threatened, SCP XXXX will begin laying eggs at an accelerated rate, which hatch and mature within three seconds. Adult aggressors will be swarmed and overwhelmed by the increased numbers of specimins, subdued, and stripped to the bone. Aggressors aged 17 or less will be suffocated, but SCP XXXX will withdraw once the aggressor is unconcious. SCP XXXX will pursue any aggressor that attempts to flee, eating through any inanimate obstacles made of organic material (while leaving untouched persons and creatures that do not attack it or harm a child) and breaking through stone, metal, etc through sheer weight of numbers. The surplus population will die off over the course of 5-8 days after the aggressor is dealt with. The same accelerated birth rate will occur when the colony is "ordered" by a child to construct something larger than its' normal poulation allows. The level of cooperation between specimins has lead to the theory that SCP XXXX posseses a collective intelligence.

SCP XXXX was recovered from a playschool in [REDACTED] Arkansas, attended by the daughter of agents [REDACTED] and [REDACTED]. SCP 2903 was discovered due to her and various other students reporting a "magic sandbox" on the school's playground. SCP 2903 was recovered by Foundation personnel on the night of 11-16-09, and, during initial recovery, killed D-494939, who was convicted for child abuse. This has lead to the theory that SCP XXXX posseses some form of clairvoyance, at least with regard to nearby humans. The playschool was closed the following morning. No staff could be found for questioning, but all students were given class B amnesiacs.

Addendum 1: On 2-17-12, D-37963 was severely injured while within SCP XXXX's containment cell during a containment breach by SCP [REDACTED]. SCP XXXX is reported to have attempted to apply pressure to D-37963's wounds, and withdrawn upon intervention by medical staff. Research into this is ongoing.
