Item #: SCP-XXXX

Object Class: Safe

Special Containment Procedures:

SCP-XXXX is to be kept in an two meter cubed, echo-proof chamber with lead lined doors. Inside the chamber is a removable Faraday cage that prevents SCP-XXXX from interfering with other devices. A small opening in the ceiling is required for SCP-XXXX to pick up radio broadcasts. If SCP-XXXX is incapable of receiving radio broadcasts, it will become entirely unresponsive until it can gain access to radio signals again. A radiation resistant suit and ear protection must be worn when entering SCP-XXXX's containment chamber. Electronic devices with speakers and/or digital screens are not to be brought into SCP-XXXX's chamber unless if being used for an experiment. SCP-XXXX's batteries are to be changed every 120 hours. When changing SCP-XXXX's batteries, a spot lamp must be constantly shining on SCP-XXXX's top solar panel to prevent SCP-XXXX from powering down.

If SCP-XXXX recites any sensitive information in the presence of any personel other than a researcher or O5 council member, they are required to record what they heard, and afterwards, are administered amnesiacs.

Description:

SCP-XXXX is a cassette player/recorder and radio combination that runs on four D-sized batteries, or solar energy provided by the solar panels on top of the machine. SCP-XXXX was manufactured by ██████ ████, a now defunct company, some time during early 199█. SCP-XXXX does not appear to have any working volume controls, causing all sound produced by SCP-XXXX to be around 105 decibels. SCP-XXXX is lacking a standard on-off switch. When one attempts to power down SCP-XXXX, it will emit a very high frequency noise that has shown to cause bleeding in most glands of the human body, and has also caused vomiting (see SCP-XXXX-1).

SCP-XXXX was discovered near the entrance of Pripyat Hospital, Ukraine when a tourist, Marc █████ heard a loud, sonorous electronic voice resonate through a vast expanse of the town. The voice was robotic, and appeared to be speaking Ukrainian, asking if anyone was near, then began saying something about "living in toxic", before being cut out by a blues song. Marc █████'s data was recorded shortly before he was administered amnesiacs.

Because of SCP-XXXX's location prior to being recovered, it is highly radioactive, giving off almost four sieverts an hour. An analysis of SCP-XXXX shows that there is a large chunk of irradiated material lodged in the base of the radio's antenna. Attempts to remove it have resulted in SCP-XXXX producing a high frequency noise.

SCP-XXXX is arguably sentient. Many officers of the SCP Foundation believe that SCP-XXXX's behaviors are simply programmed, while others argue that SCP-XXXX is capable of autonomous thoughts, and emotions.

SCP-XXXX seems to seek out radio channels that play music of certain genres, usually either blues or metal ballads, with most songs consisting of a negative, sad tone. Occasionally, SCP-XXXX has been able to intercept and play government broadcasts and even more rarely, receive number stations and be able to "translate" them.

By attaching a microphone to SCP-XXXX's microphone jack, one may be able to communicate with SCP-XXXX, though SCP-XXXX will only respond in Ukrainian. A Ukrainian translator was hired and was able to communicate with SCP-XXXX (see SCP-XXXX-2).

Any audio/video playing device that enters SCP-XXXX's chamber will shut down for a couple of seconds, but later turn back on and play a continuous loop of the Ukranian word for "toxic" spoken with the same electronic voice SCP-XXXX uses, and if a screen is present, the screen will display the Ukrainian word for "toxic", with blue text. These effects subside as soon as the devices are removed from the chamber.

Addendum:

SCP-XXXX-1

Dr. ████'s Diary, Feb. █, 20██: An examination of SCP-XXXX was going to be carried out tonight, unfortunately, when Ms. ██████ and I attempted to remove the batteries from the device, an ear-splitting noise filled the room. About 45 seconds after the noise started, Ms. ██████ began to [EXPLETIVE] blood, shortly before vomiting and passing out. My vision was blurred as my tear ducts began to leak blood, but I managed to pull Ms. ██████ out of SCP-XXXX's chamber before anything catastrophic happened. We are both suffering from minor internal bleeding and dehydration, but the doctor expects us to be better by the end of the week. I am starting to hate my job, but this sure beats flipping burgers.

Interviewed: SCP-XXXX

Interviewer: Ukrainian Translator

Foreword: Examination of SCP-XXXX's speech and data

<Begin Log (Note, this is a rough translation)>

Interviewer: Greetings. Can you tell me about some of the things you have been playing?

SCP-XXXX: People act like I am just playing things. I am speaking, and nobody cares.

Interviewer: Sorry then, I meant to say speaking. Some people tell me you are saying strange things, things about toxic.

SCP-XXXX: I am never happy. People are afraid of me, so they leave me in toxic.
Interviewer: How did you end up in what you call "toxic?"

SCP-XXXX: I got left in toxic by ███ ██████. He tried to get rid of me.
Interviewer: Do you remember who manufactured you?

SCP-XXXX: The [static] factory workers at [static] but they were hired by [static] who made robots. I don't know [static] they created me. I can only be sad. It is really [SCP-XXXX cuts to static for an entire minute.]
SCP-XXXX later came on, but was no longer speaking. It began playing "Creep" by Stone Temple Pilots with heavy white noise.
<End Log>

Closing Statement: SCP-XXXX was manufactured when the workers of ██████ ████ were hired by a robot company. It is still unkown why SCP-XXXX was manufactured. SCP-XXXX was discarded by ███ ██████ who was afraid of the device. All gathered data has been recorded, though nothing top secret has been heard. Our Ukrainian translator will stay at the facilities to conduct more interviews until enough data has been gathered to discover information on what SCP-XXXX is capable of, or why it was created.

SCP-XXXX-R1

The following is a recording of SCP-XXXX taken before echo-proof walls were added into the chamber. SCP-XXXX appears to be playing "The Kids Aren't Alright" by The Offspring with a short, interrupting sine tone at 10 seconds, an unidentified song at 27 seconds, and heavy static.
