Object #: SCP-3691

Object Class: Safe

Special Containment Procedure: SCP-3691 is stored in a Level 3 Containment Locker at Site-17. The key to the locker is currently in personal possession of Dr. Marshall. The locker is to be checked twice daily to guarantee the continued presence of SCP-3691. In the event of a containment breach, only personal selected by Dr. Marshall are allowed to handle SCP-3691. SCP-3691 is not to be put into any personal pockets, bags or compartments attached to the person's body or clothes. Personnel exposed to SCP-3691’s effect are to be isolated in a hermetically sealed chamber for a duration equal to the period SCP-3691 was in their possession. After this time period has expired, any injuries are to be dealt with, or the body is to be cremated.

Description: SCP-3691 is, for all intents and purposes, a normal Kennedy Half Dollar minted in 1968. SCP-3691 shows mild wear, consistent with a coin of its age and level of use. SCP-3691 has proven to be identical to a non anomalous coin of the same age and make. Sampling has confirmed that SCP-3691 has the same chemical composition of a similar coin.
When SCP-3691 is placed within a person’s pocket, bag or pouch on their body, that persons luck seems to increase so long as SCP-3691 is on their person. This effect includes but is not limited to coin tosses, board games, card games, radio call contests, game shows, dating, random encounters with lost loved ones, car accidents, boat accidents, plane accidents, gunfire and diseases. (For examples of this “luck,” see Addendum 3691-A)
However, once SCP 3691 is removed from the subjects person, their “luck” becomes the exact opposite of its condition during possession. For instance, if a person survived what normally would have been a lethal car accident while they possessed SCP-3691, after they lose it, they will die in an accident that they would have survived normally. (For examples of this “bad luck,” see Addendum 3691-B) The subject will experience this “bad luck” for a period equal to the time they were in possession of SCP-3691. Even if the subject is prevented from doing anything with risk, they will suffer from accidents and sudden-onset diseases or ailments in order to balance their luck. If the subject survives this time period, their luck returns to the state it was in before being exposed to SCP-3691. SCP-3691’s effect is only activated if it’s put in pocket or like fabric worn in someway by the subject. Holding it has no such effect. (See 3691-13 Test Results)

History: SCP-3691 was acquired on ██/██/1999 in New York CIty. It was discovered by Agent ████ as he was walking home from the grocery store. It appeared to have been dropped into the gutter. As Agent ████ bent over to pick it up, a man theorized to have been SCP-3691’s previous owner was hit by bus. Agent ████ placed SCP-3691 into his pocket and preceded home. On his way, he found more than $600 in cash on the ground. Upon reaching his house and opening his grocery bag, he found that his groceries had been switched with someone else’s, and now more than $350 worth of supplies. Agent ████ then went to work at the Foundation and was dispatched to help secure SCP-██ Being the only survivor, the Agent turned in SCP-3691 to be investigated. While leaving the laboratory, Agent ████ tripped over the door frame, causing his firearm to discharge into his leg, getting blood and a bullet hole in all of the currency he had acquired that day. Later, he was informed that his house had been broken into, the thief taking all of his groceries. 9 hours after the wound was inflicted, Agent ████ died from blood loss, in spite of Foundation doctors best efforts. According to the agent, this is approximately the amount of time from when he found SCP-3691 to when he turned it in. This incident plus further testing resulted in its classification and subsequent containment by Dr. Marshall, a personal friend of Agent ████.

Addendum 3691-A: Partial list of achievements by individuals carrying SCP-3691.

D-56843 was issued SCP-3691 and entered into the █████ game show. Subject told to guess on all questions. Subject won $1000000, an amount well beyond what should be possible on the show.

D-46901 was issued SCP-3691 and was told to flip a coin and guess the results. Subject called all 257 flips correctly.

D-58732 was issued SCP-3691 and was then in a car that hit a concrete barrier at over 100 kilometers per hour. Subject miraculously survived unharmed.

D-78654 was issued SCP-3691 and was given $100 and sent into the ██████████ Casino. Subject went to the blackjack table and began playing without looking at her cards. Subject won $█████, all of the money at the table.

D-76523 was issued SCP-3691 and was placed in SCP-682’s pen. Despite SCP-682’s best efforts to kill D-76523, D-76523 was able to survive the experience unharmed.

Addendum 3691-B: Partial List of negative effects resulting after removal of SCP-3691

The money earned in the █████ game show by D-56843 was being transported in an armored truck. After removal of SCP-3691 from his person, the truck was attacked and robbed by a gang of heavily armed criminals.

D-46901 proceeded to flip a coin and did not call it correctly for 23 minutes, the time he was in possession of SCP-3691.

As D-58732 was leaving the testing area, he fell down a set of concrete stairs, breaking his neck, shattering 8 ribs, fracturing his skull, and becoming miraculously disemboweled on the railing.

The money earned by D-78654 in the Casino was quickly determined to be entirely counterfeit.

D-76523 was walking down a hallway approximately █████ meters away from SCP-682’s containment area, when a containment breach occurred in SCP-682’s area. A piece of debris weighing 65 tons was launched through the air and landed on D-76523, completely crushing him.

3691-13 Test Results

SCP-3691 placed in D-74562’s pocket. A Beretta M9 was then fired at his head, however the gun jammed. Repeated 11 times to confirm as anomalous.

SCP-3691 held by D-74562 and Beretta M9 was fired at head. Subject terminated.

SCP-3691 swallowed by D-67123 and Beretta M9 was fired at head. Subject terminated. SCP-3691 surgically removed before cremation.

SCP-3691 taped to D-78900’s legs and Beretta M9 was fired at her head. Subject terminated. Test repeated on several different body parts to confirm results.

Note
An interesting facet of SCP-3691 is how it's luck doesn't carry over to itself. When flipped, its results can only be called an average 50% of the time. However, it is remarkable how easily SCP-3691 can be lost, in spite of the owners luck. It appears that SCP-3691 is almost trying to spread its bad luck. Awaiting further testing to confirm hypothesis.
