[Description]
SCP-3100 is a small, red, translucent, and 13-sided object, approximately 1.5cm × 1cm in size. It looks very similar to a ruby but actually has the consistency of plastic, this includes plastic ‘wear’ or ‘stress’ on some of the corners. Due to SCP-3100 having such a strange shape it is believed that it was once part of a larger fake gemstone. SCP-3100 generates a small amount of red light that can be seen 'reflecting' off of any nearby surfaces, regardless of how reflective the surface is. It easily reflects off of the containment area walls, and this light, despite how dim it is can reflect from one surface to another a seemingly unlimited number of times. However the light has a maximum range of 10 meters and anyone outside of this radius won't be able to see the reflections of SCP-3100, the light cannot travel through entirely opaque surfaces either.
When a human sees one the reflections of SCP-3100 they will be compelled to look at its source, subjects will have the uncanny ability to know where SCP-3100 is. The compulsion to look at SCP-3100 is lost once a subject succeeds in viewing it. When a human has direct line-of-sight with SCP-3100 for the first time, the time of exposure required varies depending on the complexity of the experience, they will compulsively believe that it had an anomalous effect on them or the containment area, if the required time of exposure is not met then the compulsion to view SCP-3100 will persist. They will desperately attempt to convince anyone nearby that it really happened, but when asked to prove it they only insist that they "know it happened", they can’t even say that they saw it happen. When shown security footage of their reaction to seeing SCP-3100 they consistently claim "that's not what happened." Subjects that have viewed SCP-3100 will permanently believe that the anomalous effect they described actually happened, and nothing can dissuade them from this belief, not even multiple years of therapy were effective on any of the affected subjects, though the subjects can be used for other experiments as long as the subject of SCP-3100 isn't brought up around them.
The second time a human sees SCP-3100, regardless of what they believe, the result is almost the same. Despite believing their previous experience will repeat itself, seeing SCP-3100 seems to change their mood. The second viewing of SCP-3100 makes subjects disdainful and disappointed, they will suddenly realise that SCP-3100 does not do what they believed it to be capable of and all subjects claim that they "were wrong" and were "disappointed". Their disdainful and disappointed attitude persists for up anywhere between 6 months and 5 years, though the subject can perform other tasks during this time without issue.
Looking at photos or live surveillance footage of SCP-3100 does not trigger SCP-3100’s anomalous effects.
Psychiatrist's conclusion:
"What’s unusual about the effects on afflicted subjects is that they specifically detail what they believe happened, only needing to see SCP-3100 for a few seconds, yet claiming they didn’t see it happen but they “know” it did. This suggests that SCP-3100 affects subjects on a more fundamental level than typical hallucinations. In short – people believe that it does something but doesn’t really do anything, like a child seeking attention." - Dr. Wyatt
[History]
SCP-3100 came to the attention of SCP agents after numerous strange calls to the police in █████, Buckinghamshire, England on ██/██/2006. The calls were coming from a small group of children who were exploring an abandoned rural area that was scheduled for demolition, the children described various peculiar things like strange noises, creatures and environments. Police and SCP agents that arrived on scene found the children claiming that various bizarre things happened.
The police on the scene quickly found SCP-3100 all sitting inside of an old broken safe that was slightly opened. Being exposed SCP-3100 made them all delusional and unsure of what to do and returned to. Now that an anomalous object was confirmed to be in the area, a full-scale SCP field containment detail was called to the site to question the children and to search the area. A total of 6 SCP personnel were permanently scarred after seeing SCP-3100 before it was successfully contained.
