recital

SCP-xxxx-B-1 reciting SCP-XXXX's content.

Special Containment Procedure: SCP-XXXX is to be contained in a secured locker in Site-45. Those wishing physical access to SCP-XXXX for testing and/or research must have permission from at least one Level-4 researcher. Digital scans of pages from SCP-XXXX as well as audio and video recordings of SCP-XXXX-B’s recitations can be accessed by all Foundation personnel at the Foundation database. All SCP-XXXX-Bs are to be contained at Site-45’s animal habitat for further observations.

Description: SCP-XXXX is a book with 50 pages, made from hemp paper and bind with thin cotton cords. It is titled “xxxxxxx” (“Book of Songs”). On its pages were poems handwritten with black ink in dialect A-12 (“Old Angelic”). These poems are collectively designated SCP-2903-A. There are 39 SCP-XXXX-A in total, including one that appears unfinished. The rest of the book were empty. Common themes of SCP-XXXX-A include nature, everyday life, religion, and unrequited love. The handwriting of SCP-XXXX appears to be feminine.

SCP-XXXX’s anomalous properties activates when an avian or non-human mammalian animal enters close vicinity to SCP-XXXX。Upon making visual contact with SCP-XXXX, animals will show unusual interest in the book. They will come up to SCP-XXXX and began reading it. It took usually 20-30 minutes for an animal to finish reading all SCP-XXXX-As. During this time period, animals will concentrate on reading and ignore its surroundings. If an animal is removed from SCP-XXXX-A while reading, it will attempt to go back to SCP-XXXX until it no longer has visual contact with it. Animals that did not finish reading SCP-XXXX does not exhibit anomalous abilities.

An animal that finished reading all SCP-XXXX-As (designated SCP-XXXX-B) will gain the ability to verbally recite SCP-XXXX-As. When reciting SCP-XXXX-As, SCP-XXXX-Bs will produce a human-like, gender-neutral voice that is described by listeners as “gentle”, “sing-songy” and “pleasant-sounding”. Whilst untamed SCP-XXXX-Bs will recite SCP-XXXX-A on random, with training an SCP-2903-B can be commanded to recite a specific SCP-XXXX-A. It should be noted that besides its ability of recitation, SCP-XXXX-B does not exhibit any further knowledge on dialect A-12, nor does its intelligence show any apparent significant advancement. Humans cannot become SCP-XXXX-Bs, even if he or she can be taught reciting SCP-xxxx-As.

When an SCP-XXXX-B began reciting SCP-XXXX-A, other avian and non-human mammalian animals within a 5m radius will began to gather around SCP-XXXX-B, and listen intently to its recitation. These animals are generally placid while listening to SCP-XXXX-B’s recitations, but will show hostility towards personnel who attempts to remove SCP-XXXX-B or disturb it otherwise. After SCP-XXXX-B finishes its recitation, its animal listeners will linger around SCP-XXXX-B for a while, before eventually dispersing.

Human listeners of SCP-XXXX-B’s recitation will experience feelings of relaxation and calm. Recitations of some SCP-XXXX-As, particularly those dealing with personal feelings, also produce a feeling of mild sadness, and some personnel will remember past incidents associated with strong emotions. Overall, however, human listeners will come out of the recitation feeling mentally rejuvenated. It is assumed that animal listeners feel similarly to the recitations, due to their observed calm state during the recitations.

Containment Log

SCP-xxxx was first found in ███ ████, USA, after Foundation personnel received reports that a very large gathering of stray cats, dogs and birds blocking off State Route ███. Foundation agents arrived at the site, discovering a stray tabby cat, later designated SCP-xxxx-B-1, as the source of the gathering. SCP-xxxx is laying nearby SCP-xxxx-B-1. It is assumed that the book was dropped there, and SCP-xxxx-B-1 happened to pass by. SCP-xxxx, SCP-xxxx-B-1, and the other animals present at the scene were brought to Site-45. SCP-xxxx-B-1 remains under Foundation containment, while the other animals were either released into the wild or sent to local animal shelters after examinations show no anomaly.

When studying SCP-xxxx, reseachers noted connections between the book and several partially burnt manuscripts discovered in a dilapidated shrine in SCP-2746, designated SCP-2746-2-47. SCP-2746-2-47 are a series of literary works ranging from poetry, prose, and diaries, including a book titled “xxxxxxx”(Book of Hymns). Similarities between the two works include poetic structure, stylistic similarities, and specific preference of certain words and similes.1 The handwritting of these works also has a 100% match. These evidence indicate that the author of SCP-xxxx may have originated from SCP-2746. However, SCP-2746-2-47 manuscripts do not have any anomalous properties.
