Item #: SCP-XXXX

Object Class: Euclid

Special Containment Procedures: Biological Containment Area-26 has been constructed and reinforced in order to contain all known instances of SCP-XXXX. The surrounding ten (10) square miles has been evacuated and cordoned off and the land has been publicly declared a "hazardous zone". Evacuated civilians are to be monitored for any signs of SCP-XXXX activity; any possible grounds for Protocol XXXX-01 is to be reported and enacted immediately. All occupants of Area-26 are to be briefed on SCP-XXXX upon arrival and are expected to know and understand Protocol XXXX-01.

The airlock entrance to Containment Room Alpha is to be locked at all times, unless otherwise directed by the current Area Director. Opening of the entrance is to involve no less than five (5) on-site personnel observing the door. Food is to be delivered to Containment Room Alpha by means of the airlock hatch three times a week. Following enactment of Protocol XXXX-01, personnel are to clean and decontaminate Containment Room Beta.

Description: Currenly contained at Area-26 is, at last known count and after thorough testing, six (6) creatures currently designated as instances of SCP-XXXX. Due to the nature of SCP-XXXX, a precise description is as yet unavailable. However, consistent testing has concluded that SCP-XXXX appears to be an avian species, roughly 0.5 meters in length, and is capable of traveling at extreme speeds; tests have clocked in at over 10,000 meters per second. SCP-XXXX apparently uses this speed to evade observation, as all attempted sightings have been unsuccessful. Unlike other avian species, instances of SCP-XXXX make no sounds or calls, except during Phase Three (see below), during which loud screeching can be heard. All known instances of SCP-XXXX have been observed to be predatorial and carnivorous, preferring to hunt even when the option of being fed is presented.

The hunting strategy of SCP-XXXX has been split and classified into three distinct phases. During Phase One, SCP-XXXX will begin by targeting a single, macroscopic organism with visual capabilities; testing has shown a predilection for mammalian species. SCP-XXXX will then appear in the target's peripheral vision as what has only been described as a "rapidly-moving blur". Test subjects have noted that SCP-XXXX initially appears far away from the target, usually no closer than 30 meters, yet always in the target's periphery and only to the current target. After the initial sighting, one of two things happen:

  • If the target experiences any sort of fear, terror, anxiety, confusion, or suspicion, or in any way considers SCP-XXXX as anything but a harmless entity, Phase Two will begin sometime in the next 4 to 24 hours.
  • If the initial sighting has failed to evoke the required emotions from the target, SCP-XXXX will seek out a new target and proceed with the initial sighting once again. SCP-XXXX is able to "read" emotions from its targets and hunt accordingly, similar to other predatory creatures. Repeat sightings to past targets who have failed to evoke the required emotions during the first sighting have been known to occur in 22% of repeat exposure trials; psychological examinations of these targets can be found in Report XXXX-04.

Once Phase Two begins, SCP-XXXX will continue to appear in the periphery of its target's vision until the start of Phase Three. Further sightings will continue at a increasing rate, up to once every ten (10) minutes, until the start of Phase Three. Hightened states of the emotions evoked by the target in the first phase will accelerate the frequency of sightings until the start of Phase Three. Test subjects in Phase Two have noted that SCP-XXXX appears closer during each subsequent sighting, yet never closer than 2 meters.

Phase Three begins when SCP-XXXX ceases appearing to the target. It will instead be "sensed" behind and around the target's immediate surroundings. Attempts by the target to locate or sight SCP-XXXX behind them will continue to be unsuccessful. It is at this time that the target will exhibit the strongest emotions experienced during the first phase, and will begin trying to actively evade SCP-XXXX. SCP-XXXX will then begin to rapidly attack the target, its most noticeable form of attack being tearing at the target's flesh or outer layer with its "beak". SCP-XXXX will continue to attack until the target's expiration by mutilation.

Addendum XXXX-01: Protocol XXXX-01 - Any "sighting" of SCP-XXXX off-site is grounds for immediate authorization of Protocol XXXX-01. The affected individual is to be escorted into Foundation custody and led directly to Containment Room Beta. During the events of Phase Three, Containment Room Beta is to be swiftly sealed. The contents of Containment Room Beta are to then be opened to Containment Room Alpha. Once it is determined that Containment Room Beta is truly empty, it is to be sealed once more and await weekly maintenance.
