[[Diogenes' Mask]]
Diogenes’ Mask
Item #: SCP-XXXX
Object Class: Safe
Special Containment Procedures: SCP-XXXX is to be kept in a secure storage locker at all times. Due to the fact it displays no anomalous behavior unless worn, it can be handled with minimal precautions. Anyone affected by the mask’s anomalous properties should be psychologically evaluated before returning to duty.
Description: SCP-XXXX is a wooden stage mask depicting an elderly man’s face, with a leather strap attached to the back. The eyes and mouth are cut out of the mask, allowing the user to see and breathe properly. While carbon dating suggests the mask is approximately 2100 years old, it has not visibly decayed.
SCP-XXXX’s properties manifest themselves whenever a human places the mask over their face and tightens the connecting strap. Initial effects are fairly constant, regardless of the individual, and manifest as moderately increased sensory and perception abilities. However, as time passes, subjects will experience steadily increasing paranoia and mistrust of authority figures. This often manifests as belief in a variety of conspiracy theories. See the test log for details.
It should be noted that SCP-XXXX does not demonstrate compulsive properties; it can be safely removed at any point. Subjects are often reluctant to remove the mask due to their appreciation of its beneficial effects. Upon removal, most subjects will slowly return to normal. Late-stage symptoms will typically remain.
Test Log:
Subject A: 24-year old white male. The subject was given SCP-XXXX and ordered to put it on. At first the subject was enthusiastic, most notably after scoring 15 points higher on an IQ test. However, roughly three hours after use, subject became agitated, displaying signs of paranoia and obsessive-compulsive behavior. When questioned about various historical events, the subject expressed doubt of the JFK assassination, 9/11, and the moon landings. Subject refused to remove mask, stating it was helping him “see the truth”. At hour nine, subject developed delusional parasitosis. Shortly afterwards, the subject committed suicide by breaking a mirror and using the glass to cut his wrists. SCP-XXXX retrieved from subject’s corpse.
Subject B: 37-year old Hispanic male. Same procedure as Subject A. Subject also displayed increased perception and pattern recognition ability. Three hours after activation subject displayed paranoia. Instead of developing theories about historical events, this subject tended towards astronomy. Subject stated belief that the earth is flat and that the moon does not exist. Six hours after use, the subject refused to eat or drink, suggesting they were poisoned (No drugs or poisons were included in subject’s meals). Subject then refused to cooperate with Foundation agents, stating that they were enemy agents of some sort. Subject terminated.
Subject C : 22-year old white male, member of the American Nazi Party. Prior to the test, the subject expressed doubt in the holocaust. Upon wearing the mask, subject displayed similar symptoms to subjects A and B. However, only one hour after use, the subject had developed a complex theory relating the Jewish to most historical events. Two hours after use, the subject attacked a guard, calling him a “Jewish spy”. The subject was then terminated. It appears that the mask encourages conspiracies drawn from the wearer’s background knowledge.
