Item #: SCP-2681

Object Class: Safe

Special Containment Procedures:

SCP-2681 is to be kept in a tank of fresh water at approximately 21 degrees Celsius. Personnel are not advised to interact with SCP-2681 outside of testing, despite its relative safety. SCP-2681 does not require constant observation, and has never indicated any sign of powers beyond those documented. In the event of an emergency, water is to be drained from the tank through an ultra-thin net installed in the base.

Any personnel caught attempting to remove SCP-2681 from the tank are to be disciplined immediately.

Description:

SCP-2681 is a species of goldfish likely originating from China. On their own, they have been labeled (SCP-2681-01). When submerged in fresh water, they appear to identical to the Common Goldfish (Carassius auratus). However, when they are removed, they immediately disintegrate into a pile of ordinary sea salt (SCP-2681-02). The salt has no special qualities, and it is impossible to differentiate SCP-2681-02 from normal sea salt.

Testing has shown that SCP-2681-01 does not have any abnormal properties either. No part of it remains after disintegration, and it is unknown how or why it manages this.

Addendum:

SCP-2681 was discovered when a Chinese farmer was sold a small tank of what appeared to be Common Goldfish by an unknown stranger. When he removed one, he discovered its properties and offered it to a Buddhist monastery. When it was rejected as a hoax, he attempted to return it to the wild.

Fortunately, Team C-481 intercepted him after hearing rumors of a man with magical goldfish. He suffered a stroke when confronted by the team, which took SCP-2681 back to [name redacted].
