Item #: SCP-####

Object Class: Safe

Special Containment Procedures: SCP-#### is to be contained in a 5 m x 5 m x 5 m secure room, padded with ten 15-centimeters thick layers of soundproofing material. A team of researchers must permanently monitor the room through audio surveillance, and handle incoming communications. All communications must be recorded and transcribed.
SCP-#### must remain connected to a functional phone line, and must not be unplugged outside the context of authorized experimentation (See Incident Report ####-i1). As of Experiment ####-e7, experimentation on SCP-#### is now denied.

Description: SCP-#### is a rotary dial telephone of unknown brand, resembling models produced between 1960 and 1980. Its abnormal properties manifest when receiving or sending calls.

SCP-#### will occasionally ring, even when connected to a phone line that doesn't have a number assigned to it, or that is not reachable from outside the Foundation's network. So far, all of the calls that have been received were from people (thereafter referred to as SCP-####-1) claiming to have dialed a wrong number. As of yet, all attempts at interrogating the callers have come to a failure. When communication with an instance of SCP-####-1 is attempted, it will keep apologizing and eventually hang up.
When making a call, SCP-#### works like a normal telephone, as long as it is connected to a phone line, except for its ability to call unassigned numbers, or numbers that shouldn't be reachable.

SCP-#### changes behavior when unplugged or otherwise physically disconnected from the phone network. Under this configuration, incoming communications come from either aggressive or distressed callers (referred to as SCP-####-2) making incoherent conversations. The longer SCP-#### remains unplugged, the more illogical the discourses become.
When making a call under the same configuration, the appropriate interlocutor can be reached but will not keep any memory of the call See experiment log SCP-####-e2.

History: SCP-#### was found in an old, long-uninhabited house in ███████████, after it had been acquired by ████████ ████████████. The new owner of the house complained to the local police about receiving anonymous calls. These calls were from a distressed man claiming to be "locked in the basement". The basement of the house was empty, and trying to convince the caller resulted in highly aggressive response, including insults and death threats.
It was brought to the attention of the Foundation after it has been discovered that SCP-####'s cable was not actually plugged to the wall socket. The object was then confiscated by the Foundation, and the owner of the house was administered class A amnesiacs.

Incident ####-i1:

Date: ██-██-20██
Location: Site-██
Description: Incident ####-i1 occurred during an experiment which aimed to measure the frequency of the calls when SCP-xxxx is unplugged. The experimentation protocol required incoming calls not to be answered during the time of the experiment (24 hours). As time passed, the frequency of the calls kept increasing as well as the volume of the ringing signal. After ██ hours, the experiment had to be stopped when the noise emitted by the object went over ███ decibels, threatening the health of the Foundation personnel and the integrity of the installations.

Such effects did not manifest during the same experiment when SCP-#### was connected to the phone line.

The ringing signal had to be stopped by answering the call. The caller was an extremely aggressive man screaming incoherent phrases. While most of the discourse while incomprehensible, certain ideas seemed to appear frequently, such as "being forced to silence", "not being able to talk freely", "being made unable to speak", "having to scream louder and louder", or [REDACTED].

Experiment ####-e1:

Date: ██-██-20██
Supervisor: Dr Wilson
Report: The objective of this experiment was to test the ability of the object to operate when disconnected from the phone network.

A member of the SCP personnel, ███████████, was called using SCP-####, and instructed to write down a 30-digit code. The objective was to test the integrity of the information transmitted using the object.
At the end of the experiment, ███████████ was unable to give back the test code, and claimed not to have received any call.
An interpretation of the result of this experiment would be that the called party will not keep any memory of a call if SCP-#### is unplugged. Further testing necessary.

Experiment ####-e2:

Date: ██-██-20██
Supervisor: Dr Wilson
Report: This experiment consisted in a reproduction of ####-e1, with the called party being placed under surveillance. Medical equipment was used to track the activity of the subject's brain during the experiment.
The result of this experiment invalidates the memory loss hypothesis, as it turns out the called party never actually receives the call. Yet the call is answered by a person claiming to be the called party, and who's able to confirm their identify and their involvement in the foundation.
Dr Knoll, who worked on objects with such properties, theorized that the device might be able to communicate with other dimensions. Further testing necessary to confirm this hypothesis.

Experiment ####-e3:

Date: ██-██-20██
Supervisor: Dr Wilson, Dr Knoll
Report: Dr Knoll was invited to join the experiment for his experience in working with objects able to interact with alternate dimensions and realities.
In this experiment, SCP-████ was used to generate a random number which, by the nature of the object, was guaranteed to be unique to this reality. This number was given to a test subject who's subsequently been called using unplugged SCP-####. As expected, the phone operated by the test subject didn't receive any call.
As in the previous experiment, the call was answered;and the subject on the other end was able to give back the test number.
The result of this experiment invalidates the alternate reality theory.

Experiment ####-e7:

Date: ██-██-20██
Supervisor: Dr Wilson
Report: During this experiment, SCP-#### was disconnected from the phone line, and used to call itself.
