The Enigma

Item #: SCP-XXXX

Object Class: Safe

Special Containment Procedures: SCP-XXXX is stored on a table in the center of its containment cell, which measures approximately 10mx10m. SCP-XXXX is not to be removed from its containment cell, unless authorized by at least a Level-3 researcher. Anyone exposed to SCP-XXXX outside of testing will be immediately detained and given a psychological evaluation and basic language test. Any instances of SCP-XXXX-1 in Stage 3 are to be kept isolated in their own cells until expiration.

Description: SCP-XXXX is an Enigma machine, worn but otherwise fully functional. It is identical to the four-rotor Kriegsmarine variety used by the German Navy during World War II. The primary effect of SCP-XXXX only occurs when a person is within 5 meters of the device. Length of exposure before symptoms occur varies with proximity to SCP-XXXX, and the effects are divided into three stages:

  • Stage 1: After 4-6 minutes of exposure, subjects lose the ability to speak in any language they previously knew and begin to speak in an encrypted language, referred to as SCP-XXXX-1. Subjects in Stage 1 can still write and type in their former language, and can understand other subjects affected by SCP-XXXX.
  • Stage 2: After 13-16 minutes of exposure, subjects lose the ability to write or type in in any language other than SCP-XXXX-1. Deaf subjects also cannot use sign language, which is replaced by a signing version of SCP-XXXX-1.
  • Stage 3: After 29-32 minutes of exposure, subjects become violent and hysterical, and attack anyone in sight. 24 hours after Stage 3 begins, the subjects dies, usually from stroke, seizures, or ███████████ ██████████. It is not currently understood how or why subjects enter this state.

All attempts to decrypt SCP-XXXX-1 have not succeeded, due to SCP-XXXX's second ability. Once a decryption attempt has been made, the rotors of SCP-XXXX rotate to new positions, and the composition of SCP-XXXX-1 changes, including the characters and type of encryption used. This affects all instances of SCP-XXXX-1, including writing, video, and audio recordings, regardless of when it was recorded. However, test subjects in Stages 1 and 2 are able to use SCP-XXXX-1 without this second property manifesting, and can use the new version immediately after a change has occurred.
If a subject is removed from the vicinity of SCP-XXXX while in Stages 1 or 2, they do not advance to the higher stages, and can continue to communicate using SCP-XXXX-1. Permission to use SCP-XXXX as a means of transmitting sensitive information is awaiting O-5 approval. See Incident Report C194.

Incident Report C194

On █/█/████, all subjects afflicted with the earlier stages of SCP-XXXX-1 simultaneously entered Stage 3 and proceeded to attack nearby personnel and destroy recording equipment, a behavior not present in earlier subjects. This event resulted in the deaths of ██ staff members, █ D-class personnel, and the termination of all SCP-XXXX test subjects. At this time, testing of SCP-XXXX is limited to one subject at a time, until the cause of this incident is uncovered.
