SCP-XXXX

Item #: SCP-XXXX

Object Class: Safe

Special Containment Procedures: SCP-XXXX is to be kept in a standard large-object containment locker. SCP-XXXX is currently contained at Site-73.

Description: SCP-XXXX is a Floataway-brand isolation tank. It is physically identical to a standard Floataway isolation tank. However, when a human subject enters SCP-XXXX and the lid is closed, the subject undergoes anomalous psychological effects.

Subjects enclosed within SCP-XXXX grow drowsy after approximately 5 minutes, regardless of prior wakefulness. The subject will float on its back and slow its motion. As subjects begin to fall asleep, hallucinations are reported in approximately 80% of tests. These hallucinations are typically of a dissociative nature, as is sometimes observed in non-anomalous hypnagogic1 hallucinations.

Common hallucinations include absence or excess of sensation in specific areas of the subject's body, the feeling that the subject's basic bodily functions are not the subject's own, and the feeling that specific parts of the subject's body are foreign objects. While the content of the hypnagogic hallucinations is not particularly unusual, such hallucinations are much rarer in non-anomalous settings.

At a point in time between the onset of hallucinations and the onset of sleep, the lid catch of SCP-XXXX will release, and the subject will become fully awake. Testing reveals that the subject will wake even if SCP-XXXX's lid is prevented from opening.

At this point, the primary anomalous effect of SCP-XXXX takes place. The aforementioned hallucinations do not vanish or diminish when the subject wakes up. Testing indicates that the hallucinations remain active for at least 18 months. It is currently unknown whether the hallucinations ever dissipate.

These hallucinations are typically highly debilitating to the subject. While subjects can typically be convinced that the feelings are illusory with psychotherapy, no cure has yet been found.

Test log:

Subject: D-55017
Results: 6 minutes after D-55017 entered SCP-XXXX, its lid opened as expected. D-55017 exited SCP-XXXX unassisted. She was observed to shake and rub her right hand as she left the testing chamber. In debriefing, D-55017 described a sensation of "pins and needles" in her right hand.
Long-term results: In follow-up interviews, D-55017 noted the persistence of the sensation 12 hours, 24 hours, and 48 hours after testing. Moreover, D-55017 claimed to be incapable of sleeping, due to the sensation. D-55017 was administered sedatives, and fell unconscious as expected. On awakening, D-55017 continued to report paresthesia in her right hand.

Subject: D-55279
Results: As D-55279 stepped out of SCP-XXXX, he looked around himself several times. D-55279 began to speak, but jerked backward after saying his first word. D-55279 has barely spoken since the test, and reacts negatively at each attempt to do so.
Excerpt from D-55279's written report: When I started to fall asleep in the pool thing, I could hear someone else snoring in time with my breathing. Then it opened up, and I heard someone suck in a breath. When I started to ask where the noise was coming from, I heard what I was trying to say, but I wasn't saying it. The weirdest thing of all was that it sounded just like me.
Long-term results: After intensive psychotherapy, D-55279 claims to be convinced that his voice and breathing are his own. Nevertheless, D-55279 continues to appear startled at the sound of his own voice, and prefers to write when communicating.

Subject: D-55730
Results: As SCP-XXXX opened, D-55730 started moving erratically. She appeared to be trying to throw her left leg out of SCP-XXXX. This was unsuccessful, as the leg remained attached to her body. D-55370 then attempted to punch and pull off her leg. After D-55370 was restrained and removed from SCP-XXXX, she continued to complain that a fake leg had been attached to her. When asked where her original left leg was, D-55370 became angry, and accused the researcher of stealing it.
Long-term results: D-55370 has ceased to act with violence towards her leg. D-55370 still reacts to its presence with revulsion. D-55370 cannot walk without crutches or other assistance.
