Item #: SCP-XXXX

Object Class: Euclid

Special Containment Procedures: SCP-XXXX A-D are to be kept away from animals, specifically vertebrates, outside of designated ‘feeding’ times. The environment contained at Site-███ is to be kept undisturbed by unnecessary light or sound. SCP-XXXX A-D should be monitored for restlessness, and provided with environmental enrichment, such as card board boxes and cat toys, as is seen fit to keep them content and docile.

Description: SCP-XXXX consists of four identical creatures.
Each is a nebulous form, similar in a appearance to a dark opaque smoke, in the shape of a square about .2 meters on each side, with one corner blunt and set with a mouth like structure, and a tail like appendage protruding from the corner opposite it. In both it’s form and general behavior it is not dissimilar to a sting ray. At times they may appear to have additional features, however reliable documentation is made impossible by their cloudlike bodies. Attempts to photograph these creatures yielded predictably blurry and unhelpful images. Their movements range from slow swooping to more jittery flapping and rustling motions.

When presented with an animal afflicted with pain, the pain shroud takes immediate interest, approaches the affected area, perch and make a drinking motion after which the sensation of pain diminishes as ceases. Causes of the pain, such as injury or illness, remain unchanged, and healing processes are not aided.

They are able to detect physical suffering at distances of tens of meters, and are undeterred by physical obstructions, however can be interrupted or distracted by the presence of other consciousnesses or their own disinterest in the activity. Similarly, their movements do not appear to be wholly restricted by physical barriers.

Their intelligence level is unknown owing to the difficulty of motivating them to participate in tests, and the difficulty of designing tests which challenge them without causing irritation sufficient to encourage them to escape.

SCP-XXXX-A was brought to an animal shelter by a concerned citizen after its discovery following a fire on ██/██/██ which destroyed several homes, and was the cause of three deaths and numerous injuries. At the time of arrival, the creature was docile enough to be carried in a plexi-glass aquarium and remained in this relaxed state for two days following, gradually becoming more alert and responsive. By day four, SCP-XXXX-A began taking interest in the sick and wounded animals also kept at the shelter, and ceased to be content to rest in the aquarium. Unable to recapture the creature, the shelter made calls to nearby animal control services in the process alerting SCP front organization ████████.

SCP-XXXX B and C were discovered at a slaughter house in location after being mistaken for a bat infestation. Seeming lethargy and unresponsiveness among the cattle held there lead the owners to investigate. Seeing the dark and airborne creatures, The pair were collected, along with a dog with a wounded leg off of which they were feeding, and brought to the current facility on ██/██/██.

Subject D was retrieved from a hospice, following the death of a caretaker. H█████ G████ worked at the facility for 18 years, and succumbed to a respiratory infection at age 62. Unverifiable reports describe Subject D as belonging to her, and would on occasion bring the creature on her rounds, singing to it.

Addendum: [They do not like bells. Toys that rustle or crinkle seem to go over well.]
