Item #: SCP-3927

Object Class: Safe Euclid

Special Containment Procedures: All artifacts found containing SCP-3927 are kept in a secure vault in Site-77. Vault is kept at 0% humidity and 253 degrees Kelvin. All artifacts are wrapped in an opaque synthetic membrane. The membrane is not to be removed unless permission is given by a containment specialist for SCP-3927. Humanoids affected by SCP-3927 are to be dealt with on a case by case basis. Contact containment specialist ██████ at ███-███-█████, and say codephrase "Foxrot geometry palisade 77" for advice.

Description: SCP-3927 is a sequence of letters which demonstrate anomalous properties when engraved in stone. The letters can be in code, alternative alphabets or in an anagram to show anomalous properties. Controlled experiments with the sequence have determined that in order for anomalous activity to occur, the engraver or the person ordering the engraving must both understand the meaning of the letters and be aware of the anomalous consequences.
The anomalous sequence is:

The Foundation is unsure as to what these letters stand for.

Anomalous activity includes provoking short-term feelings of anxiety and confusion, especially in that of widows and unmarried men. Some have reported feeling déjà vu, seeing the sequence in their dreams and unconsciously copying out the sequence when feeling idle. For this reason, viewing the sequence is regarded as a beta class cognitohazard.1 One consistent anomalous property is that exposure to the sequence inscribed in stone induces long-term feelings of inadequacy in non-Christians, but long term feelings of anxiety or existential dread in Christians.

The first recording of the inscription was in 1763, when British politician Thomas Anson commissioned Flemish mason Pieter Scheemaeckers II to engrave the Shepherd's Monument in the gardens of Shugborough Hall. The monument measures 1.8 x 0.6 x 2.8 metres, and shows (among other decorative items) a marble relief of a mirrored copy of Nicholas Poussin's painting Et in Arcadia ego, below which is the inscription:

The second inscription under SCP-3927 is believed to stand for diis manibus (Latin: for the ghost-gods2) This is an example of what Dr L██████ calls mutator clauses. These are sequences of words, numbers or symbols that alter the effects of SCP-3927. They can have wide ranging effects, from neutralizing anomalous activity or triggering anomalous activity in SCP-████

However, inscriptions of SCP-3927 have also been located on 13 27 tombstones found in Israel, Egypt, Italy, Albania, Bavaria, Gibraltar, and Morocco; all of which date to between 20-480 AD. In one most peculiar instance, a tombstone dating between 90 BC and 40 AD was located in ██████, USA.

As of ██/██/197█ SCP-3927 is classified as Euclid, due to the hypothesized sentient nature of SCP-3927 (See incident report 3927-R71: The death of Doctor A████)
