Containment Hazard Control Guide

DISCLAIMER: A lot of the knowledge here is gleaned from a mixture of basic technical knowledge and common sense. I am by no means a certified engineer, and none of the information here should be utilized to replicate a real-life situation. If you are looking to apply some of this knowledge in real life, I would highly advise that you seek a proper consultation with a licensed engineer in your area, especially if said knowledge may place people or property in danger if used incorrectly.

A basic understand of this topic may be gleaned from the Wikipedia article for Hierarchy of Hazard Controls1.

Engineering: Engineering is the application of mathematics, as well as scientific, economic, social, and practical knowledge to invent, innovate, design, build, maintain, research, and improve structures, machines, tools, systems, components, materials, processes, solutions, and organizations.2

In-universe, most of the Foundation's containment successes can be undoubtedly attributed to the engineering staff and professionals that design and implement the containment procedures and devices used across the Foundation's sites. Yes, scientists and researchers find out how an object works, but it is the engineering department's job to take that knowledge and make it practical.

Containment and You

aka: why are Level 4 personnel directly touching SCPs?

One of the primary duties of a Foundation engineering specialist, and perhaps the most critical, would be to experiment with, approve, and implement effective containment protocols for the various threats and anomalies that the Foundation contains. A seemingly minor mistake could end fatally for the researchers and containment staff that rely on effective containment procedures to protect them.

As a writer, creating effective containment procedures shows others that you did your research and thought carefully about what the anomaly is, and the measures the Foundation takes to keep it contained from the world. Well-written containment procedures are similar to a well-fitted tuxedo or a beautiful gown - the work shows, and draws people in.

SCP Drafts

rating: 0+x

Object Classification: Safe

Special Containment Procedures: All known manufactured instances of SCP-XXXX are kept in the Devices Storage wing at Research/Storage Site-16. All devices are to be inspected on a weekly basis by the assigned electronics technician and technical team, with any modifications to the maintenance cycle being approved by the Storage director beforehand. At the time of this writing, there are currently sixteen (16) instances of SCP-XXXX contained and maintained at Site-16.

Any instances of SCP-XXXX that are recovered in the field and not associated with any known groups of interested are to be inspected by a certified Foundation technician at first opportunity, and then sent to Site-16 utilizing a Class II mobile device containment unit (MDCU) for necessary repairs, research, and storage.

Any persons captured utilizing SCP-XXXX are to be administered Class R amnestics, combined with suggestion therapy, to destroy any evidence of SCP-XXXX's existence.

Any instances of SCP-XXXX that are recovered or captured from a known group of interest are to be quarantined in a Class I MCDU, and sent to Site-15 for analysis and containment. If this is impractical, SCP-XXXX is to be destroyed in the field by whatever means are available to the agent.

All Foundation agents and MTF operatives in the field are to utilize the FE-151 "Stonewall" jammers to defeat rogue instances of SCP-XXXX in the field.

Description: SCP-XXXX is a modified radar speed gun system, utilizing the body of a Stalker Pro radar gun system. In place of a counter is a LCD display, and there are ports for data transfer to and from a computer - no known software has been encountered that can utilize the information that SCP-XXXX generates.

The inside of SCP-XXXX is similar to the internals found on conventional radar guns, with a major exception - the Gunn diode oscillator unit is replaced with an unknown oscillator unit, which has resisted all attempts of opening available to technical staff at Site-16. Attempts to study the diode unit are ongoing.

When SCP-XXXX is aimed and fired at a person, the object sends out a radio pulse that is reflected back, forming an outline of the person on the object's screen. In contrast to a regular radio pulse, the pulse emerging from SCP-XXXX does not seem to be affected by objects or barriers in between the object and its target. The maximum range of detection has been determined through experimentation to be 120 meters, with a 30 degree angle cone from center.

Humans that have been hit by the originating pulse reflect a pulse back to the object, which then forms a visual display on the LCD screen. This screen, in addition to showing the position of the targets, also displays a color on the screen. This color, according to the GOC "Mooneyes" manual, corresponds to the nature of the target, with specific colors designating specific anomalous attributes.

Notably, SCP-XXXX does not appear to register other objects or even other anomalous humans on the radar screen, thus making it unreliable at detecting most forms of anomalies that the Foundation encounters.

SCP-XXXX appears to have been manufactured by an experimental wing of Prometheus Labs, prior to its dissolution in 19██, and the resulting technology now being utilized by the Global Occult Coaition (GOC). Foundation intelligence officials and engineering officials have concluded that SCP-XXXX was an early generation model of the VERITAS units now fielded by GOC PHYSICS units, and heavily attributed to the organization's newfound successes throughout its production run.

Addendum XXXX-1: Following the subsequent events of a Coalition interdiction involving [OPERATION CLASSIFIED - LEVEL 5 CLEARANCE REQUIRED], one copy of SCP-XXXX, complete with instruction manual, carrying case, two spare batteries, and a SDHC card, was captured from a fleeing Coalition agent. Prior to its proper recovery, the device was remotely detonated, injuring two Foundation intelligence agents and one Foundation technician. The instruction manual and SDHC card were recovered without incident, and attempts to access the data on the card are currently being attempted at Site-15.
Addendum XXXX-2: Foundation researchers at Site-16 have successfully created a signal jammer device specifically for SCP-XXXX, with its active components generating a radio field that actively disrupts SCP-XXXX waves within its zone of influence. The resulting technology has been designated as "Stonewall", and is currently manufactured at Site-16.

The Battle of the Apennine Gate
Run Plot

Players: 6-8 (split across two parties)
Difficulty: Medium (Above the Call), Hard (Unyielding Hand)

  • Medical, Engineering, Academics, Science (Above the Call)
  • Heavy Combat, Combat Engineering (Unyielding Hand)

Plot: The Knights of Elora

Through analysis of Adrienne's journal, as well as preliminary geographic analysis performed by Foundation scout teams, the location of the aforementioned Apennine Gate has been uncovered

Psi-7 is to secure the gate, and prevent said gate from falling into enemy hands via any means necessary
RoE: Engage all suspected hostiles, weapons hot authorized
Explosives: authorized

Plot (Unyielding Hand)
The escort team arrives ahead of the support team, to secure the area

Wave 1:
Wave 1 will primarily consist of 20 civilians, interspersed with 5 Elorean squires who are already bleeding
The squires will only attack if the team attacks first, or attacks the civilians

If the team asks a squire what is happening, the squire will reply that there is an emergency evacuation occurring, as Iridian insurgents have taken to killing 'undesirables' within Sereste, and families have been fleeing

Wave 2:

Wave 2 will be split across two sub-waves
- First part consisting of 40 civilians, 5 heavily wounded Squires, and two Elorean knights
Same engagement rules apply as above
- Second part will consist of 4 Iridian squires and 1 Iridian knight, chasing the fleeing civilians and possibly engaging in fights with their Elorean counterparts
They will engage Psi-7 automatically, determining that they are a larger threat than the wounded knights

Wave 3:
Wave 3 will be split across three sub-waves
- First part consisting of 80 civilians, 20 heavily wounded or dying Squires, and 10 Elorean knights
Same engagement rules apply as above
- Second part consisting of 20 civilians and the Royal cohort, including 4 healthy Elorean knights
Douglas will join the party at this point, while Stella and Willow retreat to safety
- Third part will consist of 4 Iridian knights and one Tier II Zhyr
They will automatically attack the party, with the Knights moving in to melee range, and the Zhyr discouraging return fire with constant flame

Wave 4:

Wave 5 (FINAL)
Wave 5 will consist of two Tier II Zhyrs and an Armaros combat construct
At this point, reinforcements may have arrived in the form of Coalition strike teams and Coalition armor to repel more enemy forces emerging from the gate
The gatehead cannot be secured until both Zhyrs and the Armaros are destroyed
Once the enemy is destroyed, Foundation support will have arrived as well, and specialized devices from the ICSUT will be installed to attenuate the gate, rendering it unusable by enemy forces
