SCP-3657: Engraved short-blade

SCP-3657-1: Bronze engraved short-blade
SCP-3657-2: Fungal growth, unknown classification, located on blade.
SCP-3657-3-[infinite summation of one, when first subject is labeled one]: Infected subject(s).

Object class: Keter

Specialized Breach Protocols [SCP-3657-3-(instance number)]: If an instance of SCP-3657-3 breaks containment at any point in time, by NO MEANS must any infantry be used to terminate said instance of SCP-3657-3. All personnel without vehicular methods of aggression must evacuate to the on site standard foundation class-a emergency bunker. Mechanized warfare should be used sparingly and at a distance, due to the corrosive properties of the chemical agents produced by SCP-3657-3. It is HIGHLY RECOMMENDED that foundation personnel utilize all forms of approximate Military Air Force or registered Foundation Airborne Defense systems. If the situation gives probable cause (situation passes know capable human methods of containment) for need of extra reinforcement, with special permission of O5 council members in accordance with clause 84 of the NEUl containment miranda, additional SCP's may be used to counteract the threat. If this step is taken, all SCP's must be vetted for interaction with SCP-3657-3. Humanoid SCP's are prohibit from all contact with SCP-3657-2, and as such, may not interact with SCP-3657-3 instances.

Accessibility: Class B members and lower are allowed to access SCP-3657 while adhering to the following protocols. Class B members however, must be assigned to SCP-3657 and may not transport SCP-3657 under any circumstances. Class C members are allowed all stated privileges. Class D personal are subject to rules commonly applied to that of their rank.

Containment Protocol's: SCP-3657 is to be contained in a 10 x 10 x 10 meter solid steel, professional lab grade freezer unit suitable for maintaining organic micro organisms in a state of lethargic hibernation for an indefinite period of time. Said unit shall be locked with a grade-b foundation keypad to which one of two people on site shall have access. This passcode is generated at random daily, and these people notified of its change at the same time. For convenience sake, these officials may be asked, if notified ahead of time, for their passcode if testing has been scheduled. The blade of SCP-3657 is to be inserted into its custom fitted silicon scabbard BEFORE being exposed to liquids capable of deteriorating metal of any kind. This includes the bio gel located within the freezer unit used to keep SCP-3657 at a stable temperature. The silicon scabbard must be sealed with grade-2 foundation adhesive once SCP-3657 is inserted. Two people must hold SCP-3657 at all times when transporting in order to minimize risk of damage to the structural integrity of SCP-3657. All researchers or personnel in contact with SCP-3657 at any time must ware a grade-3 foundation hazmat suit, and no more than two people may enter SCP-3657's containment cell at any given time. One outside person is required to observe all activities involving SCP-3657 from time of transport to time of storage without interruption. If interruption is required, a suitable replacement is to be found before the observer may leave. At all times, SCP-3657's cell will be guarded by no less than four veteran foundation SWAT guards, excess guards not required but accepted. Those who come under contact with SCP-3657, even when following all listed protocols, must undergo daily mental and physical examinations by on staff medical practitioners. Protocol for said examinations is strictly classified and will be repeated to on site doctor only. If any candidates fail to pass examination, the subject will be terminated within the week, and all records and personal statements within the last three months will be reviewed by O5 and resolved with the closest living relatives with prompt haste. Anyone tampering, or found trying to enter SCP-3657's containment cell without express permission, will face extreme disciplinary action, with potential suspension from site activities.
All versions of SCP-3657-3 should be terminated upon discovery or activation. Containment of SCP-3657-3 as of the (data expunged) is strictly prohibited.

Description: SCP-3657 appears to be what is commonly known among historical professors of the Bronze Age as "a western Pacific Islander bronze short-blade." A relatively rare artifact, such bronze swords were commonly used as decorative symbols of power by Polynesians rather than battle worthy weapons due to the extensive effort used to create the intricate masterpiece. Therefor, SCP-3657's mysterious appearance off the coast of the Hudson Bay in Canada by far makes it one of the most bestrewn and far placed artifacts recovered by the foundation. That is, if it truly is a sword of the time period. Due to the extensive volatility of the blades current state, it is subject to much speculation whether or not it should be tested to further identify when or how the blade itself was created. A carbon dating test was scheduled for SCP-3657 during March 14, 2013, exactly three months after its recovery. Due to the incident with the staff assigned to preform the test however, in which [data expunged], further anatomical tests on SCP-3657 have been canceled until a greater understanding of SCP-3657 has been obtained. The length of SCP-3657 has been measured and totals 3.5 feet in length. The blade itself is extremely dull, and impractical when it comes to functional use, yet the tip of the blade shows signs of having been repeatedly thrust into something at some time in the past, as evidence of its decrepit state. The hilt of SCP-3657 matches the style of swords found with Polynesian remains commonly in the area of Indonesia, New Guinea, and New Zealand, however there are several attributes of SCP-3657 that are anomalous from the given situation proposed by foundation historical experts. The blade itself is covered thoroughly and completely in what appear to be intertwining swirled engravings, intricately forged into the blade so that while much of the blade is uneven in proportional substance, it still remains very much upon the peak of tempered balance desired in such weapons. The grooves themselves are intertwined in patterns so intricate that even the best foundation microscopes have not been able to successfully determine the state of their intricacy. The grooves appear to continue beyond microscopic technologies view, and it is unknown to what extremity they arrive at before totally ending. Many of the grooves have been noted to exemplify sharply curved edges, a feat incapable of being replicated with human technology, and most certainly ancient islander smithing techniques. Such a scale of craftsmanship has never been seen before in human history, and how such techniques were practiced on SCP-3657 are unknown.

Wounds inflicted by SCP-3657-1 have shown to be exemplary of many anomalous traits that makes SCP-3657-1 so interesting. Injuries or wounds managed by the dull edge of SCP-3657-1, if the designated surface comes into contact with any of the grooves or etched markings, do not under any circumstances heal, in any permanent way. Furthermore, posthumous to the injury, subjects will continue to consistently bleed in a manner equivalent to the severity of the injury, and will continue to do so until completely at a loss of blood. Microscopic CT scanning has shown that the surface of the subjects wounds closely match the pattern of the grooves of SCP-3657-1 post injury. Further exploration of the nature of SCP-3657-1 is ongoing to determine whether or not this contributes to the nature of the subjects wounds, although it is highly expected by various on site scientists, including Dr. <redacted>, that this is the case.

SCP-3657-2 is an unclassified venomous fungal growth located across the surface of SCP-3657-1. It is mostly found in the engraved areas upon the blades surface, and is found in the greatest concentrations at both the base of the hilt and the damaged tip. SCP-3657-2 resembles the somewhat more stringent salient members of its phylum, maintaining an appearance similar to that of a spiderweb broken occasionally by a cluster of greenish white egg shaped fungal tops. SCP-3657-2 does not frequently expand or reproduce in any natural order on its own, yet is extremely hardy and can survive in most environments and temperatures for a lengthy period of time by fungal standards. Its method of reproduction is parasitical in nature, and involves the usage of the bodily systems of another organism. Upon interaction with an open abrasion of the epidermal layer (this includes the mouth and ear canals of the organism), the fungal tops of SCP-3657-2 will expand and then subsequently discharge in a cloud of silk like spores that quickly thread themselves into the surrounding tissue. It is important to note that once unsealed, the fungal heads quickly rejuvenate to their original stature, yet will not explode for at least another ninety two (92) hours. Once significantly embedded in the exposed wound, the spores begin the process of contracting in size, acting in a way similar to that of organic stitches. Researches are still unsure how exactly this occurs, due to the seemingly undeveloped nature of the spores, yet Dr. <redacted> suggests that it is an embedded function in the fungi's DNA, stimulated by the electrical impulses of the subjects nervous systems. Once the wound has been closed, so as to prevent outside interference with SCP-3657-2's activities, SCP-3657-2 proceeds to release an unknown chemical agent into the surrounding tissue, effectively burning and thoroughly killing any living tissue within three cm (3) of any functional spores. SCP-3657-2 then proceeds to incubate itself within the subjects bloodstream for a period of three days, in which spore are produced and released at a consistent unending rate. Do to the nature of the wounds inflicted by SCP-3657-1, it is believed that SCP-3657-2 uses the victims bloodstream as a launching pad for the initial invasion of the bodily system, later moving on to more permanent structures only after having exhausted the nutrient rich solution flowing through the subjects veins. Subjects usually experience abdominal pain and intense fevers that increase steadily with incubation progression, sometimes mental and audial hallucinations occur, usually in sync. In either extremity, subjects experience some form of cognitive impairment and are unable to make decisions deemed responsible by social norms. Through an undetermined method of analysis, SCP-3657-2 after said period of incubation will proceed to attack the subjects stomach, in a similar fashion to that of its initial invasion of the hosts body. MRI analysis shows that SCP-3657-2, instead of using its spores as scutches, uses them instead to encase the subjects stomach, turning it into a sort of "mind hive" of operation and production. It then proceeds, over the course of three or four weeks, to systematically attack multiple systems of the body. Consequences of this increase in bodily subversion lead to a similar increase in metabolism rate of the host, whilst strangely, invaded systems of the body seem to subsequently loose their function. For example, the liver and brain of most subjects are the first to be conquered, usually in a twenty four hour period. The liver however is left in ruin after initial invasion, being instead drained of its nutrients and jettisoned to remain virtually nonexistent. The brains higher functions are similarly left to ruin, however the rest of the central nervous system, including the medulla and the peripheral nervous system experience erratical electrical signals that causes the subject to act spontaneously. SCP-3657-2 continues to drain the body of nutrients and decompose essential systems until the subject is essentially dead. It should be noted that SCP-3657-2 also preserves the heart of the victim in a similar way to that of the subjects stomach. Once/if the body is drained of its bodily fluids, most notably its blood supply for this is known to be the main method of incubation for SCP-3657-2, the corpse along with all built up concentrations of SCP-3657-2 within its internal systems, enter a dormancy period. This period lasts until signs of active life enter the vicinity of a hundred (100) feet from SCP-3657-2.

There have been twenty seven instances of SCP-3657-3, all of which have been terminated. Only three instances, all D-class subjects, were purposefully infected with the intent of being tested. Out of these three, Subject A51 was the only one passive enough to be thoroughly studied by on site biological research personnel. See addendum A51 for more details as to the specifics of this experiment.
SCP-3657-3 is the designation applied to the dormant corpse of the previous subject infected by SCP-3657-2. When approached by viable life, vital enough to be detected, SCP-3657-3 will issue a series of sporadic orders via its "hive mind" to the surrounding preserved systems (heart, and peripheral and limited central nervous systems). A series of often virulent behaviors and physical effects follows this sudden burst of activity. When life is detected, SCP-3657-3 first releases a strong electrical shock via the spinal cord to the heart, which resultantly causes the heart to inconsistently beat at a rapid pace. The resulting heart beats continue to produce strong stimulating shocks that stimulate the rest of the nervous system in a variable pattern. Next, SCP-3657-3 releases a chemical agent similar to that used in SCP-3657-2's initial processes. While causing significant harm to the epidermal and muscular tissues, often discoloring and disfiguring it from the inside out, SCP-3657-3's body seems to grow in resistance to physical attacks, as the now dead skin becomes hard and unfeeling towards impending harm. While this happens, SCP-3657-3 simultaneously produces spores similar to that of the ones of SCP-3657-2; said spores are located within the bowels of SCP-3657-3 itself, and are concentrated in extremely large versions of the white fungal caps found on the surface of SCP-3657-1. The difference between these and their smaller cousins is that the caps found in SCP-3657-3 are filled not only with spores, but also concentrated amounts of the unknown chemical agent, now flowing freely in SCP-3657-3's bloodstream. These large fungal caps are stored filial layer of the mammalian intestines, near the base of the stomach itself. Negative side effects of SCP-3657-3's production of so many alien formations and solutions at once include a surprisingly high metabolism rate, three times that of a American Grizzly, as well as an increase in CO2 production. Apart from the disfigurement of skin, other observable effects include: shriveled shrunken eyes, with the eyes themselves bulging out of the head, extreme protruding ribcage, general bloating of the epidermal layer, slight increase in arm length and physical strength, slight decrease in height, stiffening of fingers and hands with a major increase in size, and the development of smaller more profuse orifices over the ears, nasal canal, original injury, and anal regions. SCP-3657-3 will than proceed to target and infect all detected life forms via projectile vomiting the fungal cap sacs located at the bottom of SCP-3657-3's "hive mind" via any and all orifices, most notably through the mouth. Note that the infection time of secondary subjects is significantly reduced, and once all detected subjects have been infected, SCP-3657-3 will interweave its physical form with the (usually still conscious) subjects, creating a disfigured new instance of SCP-3657-3. This process continues until SCP-3657-3 is terminated, and the longer said process occurs the less likely termination is to occur due to SCP-3657-3's exponential growth.
