SCP-1173-J affected countries, colored by severity

Item #: SCP-1173-J

Object Class: Keter

Special Containment Procedures: While the current need to contain SCP-1173-J is still considered a vital one, under no circumstances are Foundation personnel to directly engage in hostile action against individuals exhibiting symptoms of SCP-1173-J. All Foundation units are to refrain from attacking one another verbally for any reason, including as a part of an attempt to contain SCP-1173-J.

A mandated interview has been requested for all personnel to assess severity of SCP-1173-J infiltration.

Description: SCP-1173-J was is an anomalous phenomenon that has affected the majority of sovereign states that are located within the tropical and subtropical zones (between 30°N and 30°S), though sovereign states outside of the subtropical zone has been also reported to exhibit symptoms of SCP-1173-J (see: Latvia). SCP-1173-J prevented some Foundation personnel (including conscripted individuals, such as D-class personnel, and jointly employed personnel) from learning of the existence or location of the affected countries.

The existence of SCP-1173-J has been confirmed through several methods, in a 2008 survey of over five thousand Foundation personnel:

  • Higher education and longer service is not indicative of immunity from SCP-1173-J; in fact, SCP-1173-J seems to prefer to affect older researchers.
  • 72% of Foundation researchers above the age of 45 exhibit serious symptoms of SCP-1173-J, and the vast majority of affected personnel originate from North America.
  • Even though many are aware what country they were located in, several hundred senior Foundation researchers expressed confusion when asked to point it out on a map.
  • Several researchers are disturbed by the existence of Guinea-Bissau, Papua New Guinea, Guinea, and Guyana.
  • The fact that several islands may form a single nation, or that several nations may exist on a single island, has shocked many researchers.

Interviewed: Senior Researcher Dr. Jethro Zakar, M.D., Ph.D.

Interviewer: Assistant Researcher Corbyn Rampora

Foreword: Dr. Zakar has been stationed in Suriname for five years.

<Begin Log>

Dr. Zakar: I don't know why we need to do this, these stupid Overseer mandated interviews never reveal anything important.

Rampora: Dr. Zakar, we're being recorded right now, and this will be over soon, it's just one question. I have a map of the world here-

Dr. Zakar: Son, I have studied parasitiology and anomalous endosymbiosis for thirty-five goddamn years, I really do not need a third grade geography test right now. Venkat called me from the other day from Bengali or something and the whole site had to do this stupid quiz.

Rampora: I hate this as much as you do, Dr. Zakar, but we just need to finish this bureaucratic stuff. Ok, so, I have this map here-

Dr. Zakar: I already know what you're going to ask, here, let me save you some time. [paper rustling] Here's Suriname. Happy?

Rampora: Sir, that's Tunisia.

<End Log>

Closing Statement: Dr. Zakar was reminded that Suriname is not an African country.
