Item #: SCP-XXXX

Object Class: Safe

Special Containment Procedures: While SCP-XXXX is not under studying conditions, the object is to be contained in a transparent 0.3m³ vacuum container to prevent any natural (and unnatural) reactions. The surface of its containment is to be a scaling platform displaying the mass of SCP-XXXX outside the containment box. The number should display as 01.000kg precisely and any changes to its mass or size should be reported to a class B member of staff.

Description: SCP-XXXX is a spherical, silicon object. According to first observations made from outside sources, it was designed for the intention of being the roundest object on Earth with the precise mass of 1kg. But after more recent observations, the object has decreased in size over a period of 2 years and lost all possible marks and scratches since construction yet retained its perfect mass. Personnel have since then retrieved, contained and examined the object for further inspections.

Upon The Foundation's inspections, the surface of the object has heated to 1687.15K (silicon's melting point) for a fraction of a second, according to the thermal measurement apparatus, when in contact with skin. This seems to remove any matter including the fractional layers of oils left behind from a fingerprint renewing itself back to its perfect spherical form. The exact amount of time has not been identified. Small amounts of the sphere material escapes on to the subjects skin, usually fusing on the finger tips as if subjects had rubbed graphite. However, the loss of material has not resulted in any change to its mass. The burns are known to sting intensely for a brief moment and subjects tend to drop it afterwards.

Recorded Entry 1 - 15/03/20██

Dr. Thorne: Any reason as to why SCP-XXXX heated like that?
Class C Personnel: As far as we know, it seems to respond to most oily substances that interacts with it. Just touching it seems to be a main reactant. We found that it heated and lost size when exposed to oil. The oil was fused with the liquid silicon and dripped from its surface.
Dr. Thorne: And what of the fragment it's dropped?
Class C Personnel: It's currently under investigation . The mass of the silicon was 0.32g including the oil mass. The sphere has still retained its mass.
Dr. Thorne: [pause] refrain from encouraging it to decrease in size. If this thing gets any smaller then we could have a problem, especially if it's still remaining the same mass.

Due to the object's parameters of losing size and remaining the same weight, the object has been safely contained and to remain untouched as the effects may continue indefinitely resulting in a possible extreme case of a singularity thus a blackhole.

Addendum 1: The Fragments that split from SCP-XXXX have been tampered with and results show that they act as normal silicon pieces. Mass and shape changes accordingly with usual expectations and no concerns should be expressed when studying the fragments.

Recorded Entry 2 - 07/04/20██

Dr. Thorne: Has your research brought us any new reports?
Dr. Hawkins: As it happens, yes. Since its significant change in size-
Dr. Thorne: Significant? You mean you touched it?
Dr. Hawkins: Well, only a few times. It's only lost a couple centimetres-
Dr. Thorne: God damn it ████. The results could be catastrophic if it continues to decrease in size-
Dr. Hawkins: I'm aware but the roundness of the object. It's rounder than before. Every time it shrinks it's getting rounder and not to atomic level but potentially Planck level as well. This could prove so many theories and debunk others. Heck it could even help us develop a way to find the end number of pi. If we could just touch it a few-
Dr. Thorne: I won't allow it. As interesting as your finds may be I will not risk SCP-XXXX getting smaller for some theory debunking.
End of Recording

Addendum 2: SCP-XXXX has since decreased in size from 0.18m to 0.15m in diameter approx and has been kept in containment to refrain any human touch and other substances from touching it including air (though studies haven't found any reactions to air). This is to keep risk levels to a minimum and should personnel desire to study the object, request from level 3 is required.

Study: Under any circumstances should SCP-XXXX be removed for studying, the examiner should wear latex gloves to prevent any marks or scratches. it should be noted that all subjects who have handled SCP-XXXX without protection undergo 2nd degree burns to the skin usually to the finger tips.

Recorded Entry 3 - 02/11/20██

Dr. Hawkins: Doctor, I need to report to you about SCP-XXX-
Dr. Thorne: I swear to god if you've been touching that fucking ball.
Dr. Hawkins: No… the ball- the mass has increased inside its containment.
Dr. Thorne: You're shitting me? You're positive no one has touched it?
Dr. Hawkins: I'm certain. The vacuum has been the only thing deactivated during study. It's remained on its platform during my recent studies.
Dr. Thorne: Has the size increased?
Dr. Hawkins: As far as measurements state; No.
Dr. Thorne: This can't be good.
End of Recording

Addendum 3: Upon further investigation, SCP-XXXXhas still retained its current size and mass. However, small silica particles have been discovered on the scales of the containment. This leads to the potential possibility of SCP-XXXX being one of the first silicon based lifeforms. The silica crystal particles have been recovered and are under careful analysis. Further results are to be expected.
