Item #: SCP-XXXX
Object Class: Safe
Special Containment Procedures: SCP-XXXX is kept in a Low-Risk Anomalous Item Locker in Site-73, where it is to be kept when not being used for testing.
Description: SCP-XXXX is an average cardboard box, measuring 0.5 meters on each side and weighs 0.2 kilograms. On two opposite sides of the box has been stamped the phrase "THIS SIDE UP", with two arrows pointing to the top of the box. On the top and bottom are flaps which have been closed with masking tape. The masking tape does not lose its adhesive despite being removed and replaced repeatedly. A shipping sticker on top of the box locates the manufacturer, The ███████ Company, with its central headquarters located in ████████, Utah. The shipping company claims to have no knowledge of the creation of SCP-XXXX, and does not have any records of ever shipping the object. At the time of acquisition, SCP-XXXX was filled with 327 styrofoam packing peanuts, which display no anomalous properties.
When an individual comes into direct contact with SCP-XXXX, they will become affected by its properties. Affected individuals believe and perceive that whichever direction the top of the SCP-XXXX is facing is upwards and the bottom of the object is downwards, no matter what the orientation of the object is. When SCP-XXXX is in any position other than an upright position, individuals affected by its properties will report feeling a shift in gravity in the direction relative to the bottom of SCP-XXXX, which is synchronized between multiple individuals. They will experience vivid visual and auditory hallucinations that depicts their environment being affected by SCP-XXXX. A direct line of sight is not necessary for affected individuals to experience the objects effects. Amnesiacs have proven effective in reversing the effects of SCP-XXXX.
Affected individuals believe that SCP-XXXX acts as a guide for them, and believe they can not function without it. They typically express distress, confusion, and/or aggressiveness when the box is turned in any direction other than the direction which is currently downward for them (testing has revealed that if the object is facing upwards on the opposite side of the Earth of an affected individual, the individual will feel as though the box is upside down). Affected individuals do not understand that SCP-XXXX can not actually alter gravity, even when evidence is presented to them to prove the contrary.
SCP-XXXX does not physically affect the otolithes in the utricle and saccule within the inner ears of affected individuals. Tests have revealed that the vestibular system remains functioning as normal when a test subject is affected by SCP-XXXX.
On 4/1/2014, SCP-XXXX was brought to the attention of the Foundation when workers of █████'s Moving Services (located in ██████████, New Mexico) began expressing sudden dizziness and a loss of orientation after moving boxes and furniture for the ██████ family. The manager contacted authorities, believing his employees had been exposed to a chemical agent or drug. Local police interviewed the family, who reported finding an unidentified box when unpacking, which they had yet to open. The family also reported similar symptoms as the moving workers. After authorities handled the box, its anomalous effects were discovered and the Foundation was contacted. All parties involved were administered Class-C amnesiacs.
