Item #: SCP-2499
Object Class: Safe
Containment Procedures: SCP-2499 is self-contained within the observation and testing room at remote field office 72-A. Containment does not require any special procedures and the object poses no apparent threat. Knowledge of and access to SCP-2499 is to be kept to Class-4 or personnel or higher.
Description: SCP-2499 is an inert mass of unknown material roughly in the shape of a teapot, measuring approximately 2.6m, 1.6m, 1.3m in length, width and height respectively.
SCP-2499 is uniformly purple and appears to "hover" approximately 80cm from the ground. SCP-2499 appears to be fixed in space and cannot be moved or affected by any known force. Attempts to move SCP-2499 with hydraulic rams capable of exerting up to 200 tons of force normal to the object's surface have resulted in a failure in the apparatus, and/or the land around it.
On closer inspection, the surface of SCP-2499 is not round, rather it is composed 4,608 flat, triangular faces, intersecting at sharp edges and vertices. The properties of the material SCP-2499 is composed of are unknown. SCP-2499 is completely indestructible by any currently known means. Attempts to drill into it with tungsten-carbide, diamond, laser and ████████-tipped drills have all failed to result in any impression whatsoever.
SCP-2499 does not conduct nor transfer momentum, does not appear to have any measurable mass, and is completely frictionless. The surface of SCP-2499 does not react chemically in any way with any substance known. Application of superacids/bases, SCP-████ or ████████████ have not resulted in any detectable change. SCP-2499 does not conduct heat nor electricity - for these purposes it can be considered a perfect thermal and electric insulator.
The object appears to completely absorb all wavelengths of the electromagnetic spectrum, and re-emit them as a consistent purple hue of uniform intensity in all directions regardless of the level of ambient lighting. This has the following effects:
- SCP-2499 appears to faintly glow with its own light when poorly illuminated
- SCP-2499 appears to "sap" light when brightly illuminated
- SCP-2499 appears opaque when scanned by x-ray, or any other instrument calibrated for electromagnetic radiation
- SCP-2499 does not cast a shadow
The purpose field office 72-A is to prevent knowledge of SCP-2499 from spreading, and to study it by all practical means.
Examination by electron microscope at 500,000x magnification revealed a perfectly flat, smooth surface with no residual material from the environment. Nothing can stick to SCP-2499, including all known adhesive compounds. Currently known ultraflat materials can be adhered to by means of molecular bonding forces, however this does not occur with SCP-2499. No residues nor airborne particulates accumulate on the surface of SCP-2499, they merely glance or slide off due to gravity.
Inspections by scanning tunneling microscope at ████████████x magnification revealed no atomic structure of any kind. The surface of SCP-2499 appears as a flat boundary, with its edges and vertices appearing perfectly sharp at any level of magnification. Testing by proton bombardment at 0.9992c from a miniaturized on-site particle accelerator revealed no conclusive results as to the nature of the material the object is composed of. The surface of SCP-2499 does not react with sub-atomic particles like ordinary matter. All tested particles are reflected, losing no kinetic energy. It is theorized that SCP-2499 has infinite hardness, and infinite compressive, tensile, bending, and shear strength.
Each year, SCP-2499 drifts at a rate of approximately 1.93cm in a SSE direction and lower by 0.23cm. It is noted that this is the exact speed and opposite to the direction of continental drift and tectonic uplift in the area.
O5-2: What we have here is an otherwise mysterious mass of some exotic matter that defies investigation, but is otherwise completely safe. Given our directive, we would be able to close the books on this if were not for the remarkable similarity this object has to the so-called "Utah-Teapot", which is a typical reference object commonly used in computer animation. Such objects are used to test the capabilities of rendering a virtual environment, lighting, animation, physics, etc. They are usually removed from a animation project before completion.
Despite the existential implications, on-site research director Dr. Gustaf Brackman reports that we have exhausted all means of studying SCP-2499. I'm ordering a wrap-up operation at Dr. Brackman's discretion. Site 72-A is to be put in condition delta-01 "grey mode, silent observation" until further notice. Specialized staff are no longer necessary and can be transferred to other tasks after being given a C-class amnesiac. Observation and containment will be henceforth automated to conserve Foundation resources.
Addendum-01: SCP-2499 was discovered during a routine patrol by remote exploration & scouting party Gamma-22 on July 7, 2009 in ████████████████████████████
Item #: SCP-4321-J
Object Class: Euclid
Containment Procedures: SCP-4321-J is to be enclosed by a standard steel chain-link fence, 3m high topped with barbed wire. To further deter unauthorized access, the fence is to also show periodic signage indicating unsafe conditions within. References to SCP-4321-J is to be removed from all amusement park maps and related documents. A remote portable class-1 field office is to be put up near SCP-4321-J for monitoring and testing purposes and is to be staffed with one on-site technician, engineer and two armed guards.
Description: SCP-4321-J is a haunted house-style carnival ride of unusual design. Located at Six Flags over ███████████, it encompasses a land area of 600m x 900m in the north-western corner of the amusement park. The site is a flat, grassy field lacking in any features other than two tunnel entrances in the southern-eastern corner. The tunnel is short (15m long), is decorated with lighting and signage typical of 1950's style haunted-house attractions. The interior of the attraction is illuminated with incandescent bulbs, 15% of which are semi-functional, and flicker randomly.
Signage includes the following:
- "Welcome to Mr. Bones' Wild Ride"
- "Enter if you scare"
- "You must be between 5'4" and 6'3" to enter Mr. Bones' Wild Ride"
- "[EXPLETIVE REDACTED] really good value"
The entire attraction appears to be vacant, is completely automated and is powered by unknown means. Guests will pass through a mechanical gate and onto a station platform. The station platform is 20m long, features a rudimentary looped rail system with 3-5 cars ready for passenger boarding. Cars depart automatically at intervals of 10 minutes, accompanied by an arriving car from the opposite end. Each car is 1.5m long, 1.5m wide and can sit two passengers side by side.
Ride guests are instructed via a speaker system on loop to sit in a vacant car before the ride begins. As the car approaches the end of the station platform, a locking restraint system engages. The restraint system includes a contoured lap bar of that prevents the passenger from exiting the car or rising to a standing position, as well as cuffs that restrain the passenger's ankles.
When the car leaves the station platform, it will accelerate to a speed of 1.3 km/h and remain at that speed for the duration of the ride. The track continues through a tunnel 1.8m high and 1.8m wide. The tunnel is under very dim illumination and is decorated with cheap plastic Halloween decorations. There are speakers located at every 50m of track, which play a 45-second segment of heavily degraded generic horror movie music on a continuous loop.
At every 100m, the track makes a sharp 180 degree turn and traces back on itself. Parallel lengths of track are separated by the dark wall of the tunnel. The passengers only ever have a view of the segment of track they are currently on. After 450 such passes, the track continues 100m north and follows through another block of passes identical to the first. This continues another 4 times until the car effectively covers the entire area of SCP-4321-J. Following this, the the track dives down 2m to a level underneath the first. The track layout of lower levels appear identical to the first. All walls and ceilings/floors of SCP-4321-J appear to have a dampening effect on light and sound. Sound of any intensity does not carry between otherwise adjacent lengths of track or adjacent cars.
Geomagnetic surveys of land around SCP-4321-J indicate a depth of between ███-███ km. Assuming a uniform track design throughout, this suggests a total track length of ███ million km and a corresponding ride time of ██ years.
SCP-4321-J was discovered and secured in June, 2010 following the mysterious disappearances of several amusement park guests. Guests are assumed to have entered Mr. Bones' Wild Ride and are still on it.
Upper levels of the SCP-4321-J have low but passable telephone reception. Some of the guests reported missing have sent an identical text message to loved ones: "I want to get off Mr. Bones' Wild Ride :(".
Since the discovery of SCP-4321-J, a return car will return to the station platform occupied with the remains of a park guest assumed to have passed the entirety of SCP-4321-J. To date, 63 such occurrences have been recorded, 41 of which involve both seats occupied. The remains are consistently in states of advanced decomposition. The seats and floor of the cars return caked in thick layers of feces and blood. On several occasions, detached limbs (almost always legs) by mechanical or abrasive means were observed.
Once an occupied car returns to the station, the restrains release along with a pre-recorded message of "We hope you have enjoyed Mr. Bones' Wild Ride". The car then proceeds along the the track until the end, when the restrains re-engage and the car begins the loop once again.
Adjacent to the arrival end of the station platform is a second tunnel which proceeds to the outside. From there, the path loops around to the original entrance with a sign which reads: "The ride never ends".
