Item #: SCP-1XXX

Object Class: Euclid

Special Containment Procedures: SCP-1XXX is to be contained within a 3m x 3m x 3m room with walls five (5) centimeters thick of steel, lined with one (1) centimeter of lead. The walls must be surrounded by heating coils, precisely one (1) cm away from the steel and in 0.75 meter intervals. These coils are to be heated to 165°C unless testing is actively being conducted. Outside of this room must be a two (2) meter wide pathway on all sides, and finally one (1) meter of concrete lined with polyethylene.

If the chamber needs to be entered, the heating coils must be deactivated for at least one (1) hour prior to allow the room to cool to survivable temperatures. Personnel are required to wear NBC suits, with the boots vertically lined with serrated razors, and enter in groups of three (3). They may not exceed thirty (30) minutes inside the chamber. Exiting personnel must then wait in a room at exactly 30°C for ten (10) minutes, provided with water as necessary.

In the case of a containment breach, the pathway is to be injected with gamma radiation and heating coils turned up to 200°C. Should this fail to stop the object, the chamber must be flooded with 12 molar hydrochloric acid.

Description: An average sample of SCP-1XXX is a 3 centimeter thick layer of muscles and cardiovascular tissue, including veins. These tissues are not consistent with any known species of animal, and are even arranged in different manners in the same samples. Vital organs, such as a heart, lungs, or stomach, are not immediately present anywhere in the organism. It grows along the ground as a sheet, generally covering the entirety of an area that it occupies. It has not shown capability to burrow itself as a whole.

SCP-1XXX absorbs nutrients from other organisms of any kind, including, but not limited to:

  • Animalia
  • Bacteria (both eukaryotic and prokaryotic)
  • Fungi
  • Plantae

To do this, it slowly extends tendrils to secure other forms of life that are on or very close to it. The organism then proceeds to generate, and penetrate the skin with, a proboscis, absorbing minerals, blood, bacteria, and other nutrient-carrying substances directly into its bloodstream. It has been shown to extend these tendrils into the dirt and accessing plant roots and nitrous bacteria to absorb these nutrients. It cannot absorb energy from synthetic, bionic, electronic, or otherwise "man-made" sources. How the organism distinguishes between the two substances is unknown.

The organism is incredibly efficient in its energy expenditure, and uses all excess energy in cellular division to either grow and cover more ground. Currently, its growth rate appears to be a constant of 1.61m2 per hour, until it reaches a critical mass. At this point, its growth increases to be exponential with a rate of approximately 0.1% per day. This critical mass appears to be 0.04km2. It is unknown if there is a larger threshold for growth rate. Samples that are cut off from nutrition sources do not grow, though they do not appear to decrease in size, wither, or otherwise starve at any noticeable rate, either.

Growth patterns show to avoid hazards to the organism, including extreme temperatures (both cold and hot), large gaps and crevasses (it will, however, grow down these given enough time), radiation, and strong acids. It is more resistant to flames than its fleshy appearance would suggest, though it still avoid fire during expansion. If SCP-1XXX is caught on fire, it will isolate burning portions of itself by detaching the affected area and receding until the fire dies out, at which point it regenerates burned portions. It will grow on non-organic surfaces, such as pavement and metal, so long as there are enough obtainable nutrients contained underneath, or other sources of nutrition are provided. It will also grow on sheer vertical surfaces given enough time (rough surfaces, such as tree bark, do not appear to slow growth at a noticeable rate). The only discovered way to stop the growth of SCP-1XXX is to place hazards in its way.

The object has been shown to have an incredibly strong and flexible makeup: breaking through a fully formed layer of the material takes over 900 kilopascals. General cutting and piercing, though, tend to be irrelevant due to the regenerative properties of SCP-1XXX (approximately as quickly as its growth rate).

It also produces two varieties of spores. The first is a spore seed that attaches to any living tissue. After at least forty-eight (48) hours, these spores begin to grow new samples of SCP-1XXX. These spores are particularly susceptible to heat. It is unknown if SCP-1XXX has used these spores on migrating birds and began a new spread of itself elsewhere. The second variety enters the bloodstream when inhaled, and latches onto the cerebral cortex. Subjects exposed to this spore, or SCP-1XXX, lose control of certain parts of their body, more as time goes on. These limbs then perform tasks to the benefit of SCP-1XXX, such as bringing more nutrient sources and eliminating hostiles (including the affected host, if necessary). Several incidents have had subjects lose full control of their body, though some form of communication appears to be attempted. This results in a violent, raspy noise emitted from the affected host. No pattern has been discerned for this strange phenomenon.
