Reactor 4 of Chernobyl Nuclear Plant where SCP-3XXX is contained

Item #: SCP-3XXX

Object Class: Keter

Special Containment Procedures: The entity known as SCP-3XXX is housed in a 25m x 25m class VII-Ω radiation containment unit which has been built around SCP-3XXX. SCP-3XXX is located in the basement of Reactor 4 of the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant in Ukraine of the former Soviet Union. Bi-weekly, research and technical staff are to enter the plant wearing WX-2 radiation and thermal protective gear. Researchers are to measure changes in radiation levels or temperature on site, growth of SCP-3XXX, and any change in activity of SCP-3XXX. Additionally, containment unit must be inspected for breaches caused by excess heat and pressure generated by SCP-3XXX as well as stress fractures in the containment unit. Any damage or impairment of the containment unit must be repaired as soon as possible.

Due to the infamy of the site, covert foundation personal are to be stationed around the plant and prevent civilian entrance to the site. 24-hour surveillance of the facility must be maintained at all time as well as a 200m perimeter surrounding the power plant. Any civilian that breaks the perimeter must be promptly apprehended and dealt with according to the Director of the site.

To keep up the guise of a nuclear meltdown on site director has authorization to allow outside investigators or reporters within the 200m perimeter. Agents will bring them to the “Fog House” as it locally known and administer Class-D amnesiacs and sedatives then transport them to a recreated version of the Chernobyl power plant called Site B. Documentation and readings will be taken from this site or supplied by Foundation operatives. After tour of Site B is concluded additional Class-D amnesiacs and sedatives will be applied to civilians and outside personal. They will then be transported back to Fog House and escorted off Foundation property and debriefed.

Addendum 3XXX-1: Due to radiation and heat levels no personal are allowed to enter SCP-3XXX containment cells and direct observations are to be done by Star Chaser class autonomous drones.

Addendum 3XXX-2: If SCP-3XXX has grown to a size that rupture of containment cell is likely, deemed by SCP-3XXX taking up to 75% of its current cell’s volume, Engineering Core “Sentinel” is to be called on site immediately for emergency construction of a larger containment unit. O5 staff are to be notified immediately of any changes in SCP-3XXX activity.

Description: SCP-3XXX is an extraterrestrial solar being analogous to members of the order Lepidoptera1 in the larval pupal stage. Initial reports of the SCP-3XXX indicated that it was only a half meter in size although since then has grown to ██ meters (m) in diameter. SCP-3XXX produces high levels of radiation across the entire spectrum at ███ Sieverts (Sv) and heat in the excess of ███ kelvin (K). AS SCP-3XXX grows these levels continue to increase in intensity and magnitude.

SCP-3XXX was first identified in near-earth orbit coming from the direction of sun in early February of 1986. At this time, a series of large geomagnetic storms hit the Earth’s atmosphere from unusually large solar flares emitted from Sun. Only when SCP-3XXX was near the Earth was it visually detected by Foundation satellites as all other instrumentation was rendered inert by the solar flares. SCP-3XXX was detected entering the atmosphere on February 9th with a predicted impact in a rural area of western Russia. Personal were dispatched to expected impact site but nothing was discovered or evidence of an impact crater. At the time it was assumed the object had been burned up by the Earth’s atmosphere.

Almost three months passed before any re-occurrence of SCP-3XXX was reported until it reappeared at the nuclear power plant in Chernobyl. While it is known that SCP-3XXX first re-appeared at the time of the meltdown it is not known if the accident was caused by the organism or if it just drew the entity to the plant. Regardless when workers began containment of the site on April 27th, 1986, SCP-3XXX was spotted in basement of Reactor 4 eating the radioactive material and waste stored at the plant.

Local agents contacted Mobile Task Force “Daybreak” to come and secure SCP-3XXX. When agents tried to move SCP-3XXX it became hostile and doused the task force with what was determined to be super-heated plasma eliminating all team members. While several other teams arrived and attempted retrieval, aggression by SCP-3XXX and increasing levels of gamma radiation from the nearby reactor prevented all further attempts to forcefully move the creature. The organism was baited to a confinement cell using refined uranium to where the containment unit had been established for relocation.

Seven days after securing the nuclear plant, SCP-3XXX melted through its holding unit and returned to the original radioactive material it had been first feeding on. During this period of time the entity had significantly increased its body size to 2.7m in length and started to emit a strong fluorescence and low amounts of gamma radiation. A containment unit was then built around the organism to prevent escape and further damage. Director █████████ authorized that construction of a Class VII-Ω radiation containment unit be made with compound ██████████████████ identified from study of SCP-2997. At this point SCP-3XXX was content to feed on the radioactive material and did not try to escape containment.

On ██/██/1990 the larva had seemingly consumed all “food” that was in the containment unit after secondary containment was established. At this point the normal behavior of the organism ceased. The creature now 7.4m in length moved to the top of the cell and suspended itself from the ceiling and proceeded to smother itself in plasma. The plasma cooled and hardened around the larvae and according to one biologist on site it seemed to be “a god damn cocoon".
