Item #: SCP-2579 (placeholder number, subject to change)

Object Class: Euclid (subject to change)

Special Containment Procedures: SCP-2579 refers to a phenomenon capable of manifesting within any abandoned dwelling that has fallen into disrepair, retains a wooden door, has at least three separate rooms, has been ruled uninhabitable, and is void of any occupied dwellings within a one square kilometer surrounding radius. While this usually limits SCP-2579 to rural areas, it has also appeared in older, abandoned dwellings located in the financial or industrial districts of urban areas. Only one instance of SCP-2579 is known to manifests at a time. Manifestations are usually limited to the Northern Hemisphere, but also seem to favor the Western Hemisphere. As such, most manifestations are found in Europe and North America, although one unusual case of SCP-2579 manifested in the region of Western Australia suggesting that the area of effect can be considered to be near global.

Due to the migratory nature of SCP-2579, complete containment is difficult. Once a manifestation of SCP-2579 has been identified, its location is secured by Foundation personnel. Surrounding buildings are occupied and a 3km radius perimeter is established.

Description: When SCP-2579 manifests itself within an appropriate dwelling, the door shuts and becomes sturdy and solidly fastened to the walls, regardless of its previous condition. The area surrounding the dwelling begins to develop thorny shrubs and vines, consisting of species native to the area. Samples of this vegetation have been tested and display no anomalous properties. Loose strands of barbed wire and various remains of agricultural tools also manifest in uniformly poor condition. Vegetation and detritus are often arranged in such a way as to obscure entry into the building, or to make entering the building more difficult.

SCP-2579 displays only displays anomalous properties when entered through the front door. Entry via the back door, windows, or other points of egress simply leads into the interior of the dwelling.
Once a single human individual enters SCP-2579, the front door closes and locks itself through an unknown mechanism preventing immediate exit. During this time, SCP-2579 is considered active. So far attempts to force the door open during the active phase of SCP-2579 have proved unsuccessful. The door is remarkably resistant to bludgeoning, chopping, burning, or ballistic damage far beyond the capabilities of a normal wooden door. Explosives have been used successfully in achieving entry via the front doorway, but lead only to the empty interior of the dwelling. This method is discouraged as it prevents any individual within SCP-2579 from attempting egress and leads to the relocation of SCP-2579, which reappears within 24 to 72 hours on average.1

Once an individual has entered SCP-2579 they are free to explore the dwelling. Any other doors will appear to be gone and windows resist all attempts to open them or shatter the glass. Upon leaving and subsequently returning to the room containing the front door of the building, the door will be found unlocked and open, but will lead to the area visible from the windows rather than the original place of entrance.

Upon the individual exiting SCP-2579 through the front door, the original point of entry will unlock, allowing additional entry so the process may repeat. D-class personnel can be sent in with remotely controlled drones for the purpose of data collection.

Test Log 2579-01:

Subject: D-004 (all D-class numbers are placeholders)
Procedure: Single D-Class personnel (not informed of the nature of SCP-2579) was instructed to enter SCP-2579 and visit each room before exiting back out of the front door of the dwelling. Subject was equipped with a basic, two way radio.
Results: D-004 entered SCP-2579 with little resistance. Reported seeing only "an empty old house". After 24 minutes the front door unlocked, indicating that D-004 had successfully entered SCP-2579. Radio contact ceased.

Test Log 2579-02:

Subject: D-005
Procedure: Single D-Class personnel (who was informed of the nature of SCP-2579) was instructed to enter SCP-2579 and visit each room before exiting back out of the front door of the dwelling. Subject was equipped with a basic, two way radio. Upon entering SCP-2579, D-005 was then instructed to reenter the house and repeat the process.
Results: D-005 entered SCP-2579 with little resistance. Subject explored the house for 19 minutes before exiting the front door. Subject asked for permission to return. Permission granted. Subject reentered the house and traced their path through the rooms before returning to the point of entry. Subject exited SCP-2579 after a total of 35 minutes. Subject was then debriefed and provided a basic description of the environment.

When SCP-2579 is entered through the front door it leads to what appears to be a mirrored interior of the dwelling, albeit with a significantly muted palette and muggy atmosphere. No artificial lighting is presence, and it appears to be past midnight regardless of the time at which SCP-2579 was entered. Curiously, the dwelling often appears to be in slightly better condition from inside SCP-2579. The walls, roof, and floor are reported as being intact, and furniture covered in white sheets of cloth is also described as being present. Aside from the time of day, the view from the windows is vastly different. If the building is located in an area that was previously a neighborhood or housed other dwellings, the area will appear as it did when all buildings were present (though all building will be in a similar state of disrepair). In addition, thick clusters of vegetation will occupy the gaps between dwellings. Unlike the vegetation on SCP-2579’s exterior, this vegetation is grey and ashy. If brought into a dwelling, it disintegrates into a fine ash-like substance. So far attempts to retrieve this substance for proper testing have been unsuccessful.

At this point the possible memetic effects of SCP-2579 materialize. Individuals who have been informed of the nature of SCP-2579 will be able to explore the environment and interact with its inhabitants, whereas individuals are not aware of SCP-2579’s nature will enter an altered state and acquire the designation SCP-2579-b.While in this state an individual is capable of basic motor functions, but lacks any higher cognitive abilities or self-preservation. This state has been compared to a particularly severe lobotomy. Attempts to remove SCP-2579-a from SCP-2579 result in the subject expiring immediately upon exit.2 If lSCP-2579-a is left to its own devices, the residents of SCP-2579 will remove it from the area.

Test Log 2579-03:

Procedure: D-001 (not informed of the nature of SCP-2579) was instructed to enter SCP-2579 and visit each room before exiting back out of the front door of the dwelling. Subject was equipped with a basic, two way radio. Immediately afterwards, D-002, who was informed of the nature of SCP-2579, was sent in to attempt to retrieve or locate the original subject.
Results: D-001 entered SCP-2579 with little resistance. Radio contact ceased after 10 minutes. D-002 displayed anxiety over entering SCP-2579. Ten minutes after radio contact was lost with the D-001, the second subject entered SCP-2579. D-001 found the first subject 7 minutes later standing on the front "porch" of the residence. First subject was reportedly "staring like a dumb—- goat with his mouth open" and offered little resistance when D-002 was then instructed to attempt to lead him out of SCP-2579. Upon exiting SCP-2579, D-001 expired. D-002 was interviewed, then terminated and autopsy was preformed on both subjects. Both bodies were incinerated after study.
Analysis: D-001 displayed remarkable vegetation growth within the grey matter of the brain. Attempts to remove the vegetation for further testing were unsuccessful. D-002 displayed no such growth.
