New SCP: A Cracked Mirror

Item #: SCP-XXXX

Object Class: Safe

Special Containment Procedures: When moving SCP-XXXX, great care must be taken to avoid further cracking or otherwise damaging its glass surface. No light above 25 lux is to be cast on its surface unless undergoing supervised experimentation.

Instances of SCP-XXXX-2a and -2b are to be quarantined together in a secure single room with standard humanoid furnishings until resolution, at which point SCP-XXXX-3 should be referred to Site 19’s Director, who will then decide to either keep the subject for further experimentation or termination. Instances of SCP-XXXX-4a, -4b and -5 should be dealt with in the same manner. Any civilians or unauthorized personnel who had contact with SCPs-XXXX-2 through -5 are to be administered amnisitics consistent with their level of interaction with the affected subjects.

SCP-XXXX is otherwise in a standard secure locker in the Anomalous Artifacts section of Site 19 and research on this item requires Level 3 authorization or higher.

Description: SCP-XXXX is an oval mirror measuring 77 cm x 63 cm bisected horizontally by a large lateral crack. It has a black polyurethane frame with a molded ornamental flower covering the bottom left corner. Analysis of its materials states that its composition is unremarkable. When lit indirectly, it may be used as a standard mirror without adverse effect.

When a light of 35 lux or greater is directly shined on its mirrored surface at an angle so as to cast a reflection on an otherwise unlit surface, it will cast a perfectly square white reflection measuring 1 m on a side, termed SCP-XXXX-1, inconsistent with the size and shape of the mirror, its obstructing flower and the crack across the mirror. SCP-XXXX-1 maintains its appearance and a luminosity of about 50 lux regardless of its distance from the mirror, the color/strength of the light or any objects placed in between SCP-XXXX and SCP-XXXX-1. SCP-XXXX-1 will remain consistent until it and SCP-XXXX are 28 m apart, at which point it will gradually fade with increasing distance.

If the mirror is further damaged prior to SCP-XXXX-1 appearing, once it appears SCP-XXXX-1 will begin moving slowly at a rate of 1 km/hr in order to reach the floor. Testing indicates that SCP-XXXX-1 will appear if sufficient light is available, regardless of the amount of damage. Upon reaching the floor, the image will split itself into two identical images of itself, which will then begin to move towards the nearest two humans at a slightly faster rate of 3 km/hr. They will continue to approach their targets until the targets, now designated SCP-XXXX-2a and -2b, are centered within the images, at which point they will increase in luminosity to 84 lux before disappearing. SCP-XXXX-1 will not reappear until resolution.

Over the course of seven days, SCP-XXXX-2a and -2b will undergo a series of gradual physiological and psychological changes that result in the subjects appearance and demeanor being different from both of the subjects’ original appearance. Subsequent morphological and psychological testing has determined that the end state for both subjects will be identical to each other and intermediate to each of the subject’s original dispositions while still retaining their individual memories. These changes will be noticeable and likely distressing to their friends and family, but both subjects will insist ignorance and that they’ve always been like this.

Exactly seven days after contact with SCP-XXXX-1, 2a and 2b will simultaneously but separately move to meet each other in a secluded, isolated place, overcoming any and all obstacles to do so. There is currently no known way of preventing this meeting and the subjects do not communicate through any known methods until they meet. Once within touching distance, a blinding light will emanate from the orifices of the subjects, lasting anywhere from 30 to 120 secs. SCPs-XXXX-2a and -2b will have disappeared, leaving only SCP-XXXX-3, which is in appearance and demeanor identical to the end results of -2a and -2b, but will also have some amalgamation of -2a and -2b’s memories and personal histories. At the same time that the blinding light disappears, SCP-XXXX will fully repair itself except for the bisectional crack regardless of the extent of its damage, SCP-XXXX-1 will reappear if appropriate and the event is considered resolved. SCP-XXXX-3 will then act as a normal human being otherwise free of any anomalies and attempt to live a normal life, which is generally difficult since this new amalgamation of -2a and -2b has no established institutional history (e.g. Social Security number, home, friends) with which it can reconnect.

If SCP-XXXX is damaged subsequent to SCP-XXXX-1’s appearance, the same chain of events will occur up to and including the images’ increase in luminosity and subsequent disappearance. However in this case, the subjects, now termed SCP-XXXX-4a and -4b, will act completely normally for the next seven days, despite claiming not to have noticed any bright lights underneath them. Once the seven-day period has elapsed however, they will again move to meet each other in a secluded, isolated place, regardless of any and all barriers in their way. The same blinding light will envelop the subjects and -4a and -4b will once again have disappeared, leaving behind SCP-XXXX-5. SCP-XXXX will once again have repaired itself and XXXX-1 reappeared as appropriate.

SCP-XXXX-5 generally elicits shock and distress in those who witness it. It will not be an amalgamation like SCP-XXXX-3, but will instead appear as if one half of both -4a and -4b were grafted onto each other, creating a humanoid perfectly bisected from head to groin into halves of each -4a and -4b. Each half will retain its original physical and psychological states, as well as its own distinct memories and personal histories. SCP-XXXX-5 will not find its condition remarkable and claim that it had always been like this. Attempts to confront -5 with memories that could not have possibly occurred while in this state will result in various psychological defense mechanisms appropriate to that half’s demeanor, but which are invariably satisfactory to that half, if not the querying individual. Since the two halves now share a mouth, it seems that the two halves will generally take turns speaking out of it, again acting as if this were a normal part of life for them. Relations between the two halves are dependent on how relations between the two original people were or were likely to have been and can range from amicable to violent and destructive. At this point, the event is considered resolved and SCP-XXXX-5 will again attempt to return to normal life, which will be impossible for obvious reasons.
