Special Containment Procedures: SCP-XXXX is to be contained within a steel chamber measuring 200 x 200 x 5 meters. This chamber comprises most of the top floor of Site 72, and is disguised as an inactive military base located in the north-central area of the Mojave Desert, approximately 68 km southeast of █████ ██████████, NV. Each of the four walls of the chamber contains a single locked door at its center, with two armed guards stationed at each door at all hours of the day and night. SCP-XXXX's chamber is filled with enough sand to cover the floor up to a depth of 15 cm. Entry into the chamber is strictly prohibited without Level 2 or higher approval. A single camera in the middle of the ceiling will monitor SCP-XXXX's activity.

Every 136 hours, SCP-XXXX will engage in a period of increased mobility (henceforth referred to as SCP-XXXX-A). For the duration of this event, lockdown protocol will be initiated, disabling any monitors displaying live feed of SCP-XXXX's holding chamber. Furthermore, entry into the containment unit during this time will be forbidden to all but Level 4 or higher personnel. Any attempts by Level 3 or lower personnel to enter the chamber and/or reestablish live feed connection during this time will be met with whatever force is deemed necessary.

Exactly 185 minutes after commencement of SCP-XXXX-A, live feed of SCP-XXXX's chamber will be reenabled. If SCP-XXXX is no longer active, lockdown will be released. If SCP-XXXX has not yet completed SCP-XXXX-1, Standstill Procedure A is to be initiated.

Description: SCP-XXXX is a hollow, rust-colored wheel with a diameter of approximately 134 cm. Samples taken reveal a composition of approximately 94.74% kaolinite clay, along with small amounts of silica, hematite, and apatite consistent with human bone. On the left side of the wheel are six irregularly-spaced rectangular holes surrounding a similarly-shaped hub. SCP-XXXX displays moderate erosion damage and is estimated to be approximately ██,███ years old.

Despite lacking any organic or mechanical systems, SCP-XXXX is ambulatory. It has been observed to roll about its enclosure after prolonged periods of inactivity, and after a particularly long session of mobility, will occasionally drop onto its right side, remaining at rest for hours or days before getting back up. When tested, SCP-XXXX displays some degree of sentience: It is generally compliant and will move or remain stationary with only small amounts of prompting. On occasion, SCP-XXXX will refuse to cooperate until its caretakers interact with it by 'playing tag' before a session. In such events, a single D-class personnel is to be sent into the enclosure to 'tag' SCP-XXXX, at which point it will resume its standard level of cooperation.

Every 136 hours, SCP-XXXX will engage in activity SCP-XXXX-A. SCP-XXXX will communicate this occurrence by emitting a series of airy humming sounds from five of the six holes around its hub. After 20 seconds of this behavior, SCP-XXXX makes its way to the nearest source of material that its trail can easily carve into.1 It will then cease all motion for just under two minutes.2 After this brief period of inactivity, SCP-XXXX will begin to roll across its selected medium along a predesignated path, its track forming a random series of patterns that will eventually cover between 225 and 7,000 square meters. These patterns, when viewed from above, form what appear to be navigational maps (henceforth referred to as SCP-XXXX-1).

All instances of SCP-XXXX-1 to date have taken approximately three hours to complete, regardless of their size or complexity. SCP-XXXX seems to have no discernible preference when it comes to selecting an area to chart, as instances of SCP-XXXX-1 to date have ranged from a single city block to trade routes spanning multiple continents. Vehicle choice also doesn't seem to be a factor, due to documented instances of SCP-XXXX-1 containing all manner of roadways, rails, sea lanes, airways, and [REDACTED].

If SCP-XXXX-A is prevented, interrupted, or directly observed, vehicles that utilize the course exhibited by that instance of SCP-XXXX-1 will be subject to a significantly increased likelihood of malfunction, unfavorable weather conditions, and/or human error. This increased chance of vehicle disaster, referred to as SCP-XXXX-2, persists until the next instance of SCP-XXXX-A begins, at which point the 'announcement' hum emitted by SCP-XXXX will shake the sand covering its containment unit back into an even distribution, thus erasing SCP-XXXX-1. While observing live footage of SCP-XXXX-A seems to trigger SCP-XXXX-2, footage recorded of the live feed can itself be observed later without causing an instance of SCP-XXXX-2.

SCP-XXXX came to the attention of the Foundation in late February of 19██, when Agent V. ████████ came across a self-proclaimed psychic calling himself "Mezmus the Astounding" on a local access television channel in northern Minnesota. Mezmus allegedly claimed that "disaster (would) soon befall ███████ Airlines." When ███████ Airlines Flight ███ crashed four days later, Federation operatives investigated the source of the broadcast and discovered SCP-XXXX contained in a chain link fence near Mezmus' home. SCP-XXXX was subsequently taken into Federation custody. Class-B amnesiacs were administered to Mezmus (real name Marcus Z█████████), and his broadcasting equipment and all recordings of his show were confiscated and destroyed by the Foundation.

Addendum: To date, 2,5██ instances of SCP-XXXX-A have been recorded. Of these, ██ have failed due to inadequate containment procedures upon initial capture of SCP-XXXX, interfering with instances of SCP-XXXX-1 once SCP-XXXX had been appropriately contained, and on ██ occasions due to security breaches by other on-site SCP's disturbing the process or resulting SCP-XXXX-1. The most egregious of these breaches occurred in March of 1989, when SCP-███ charged through the north wall of SCP-XXXX's enclosure and severely marred an instance of SCP-XXXX-1 correspondent to a shipping lane connecting Alaska and California. Just under 8 hours later, the oil tanker Exxon Valdez ran aground on Bligh Island Reef, resulting in over five billion U.S. dollars in damage and litigation and the long-term destruction of no less than ██% of the south Alaskan ecosystem.
