[[SCP-XXXX "PlantLion Pit]]
Item #: SCP-XXXX

Object Class: Euclid

Special Containment Procedures: SCP-XXXX is currently only found in its native habitat, located in the ████████████ region of the Sahara Desert. Any instances of SCP-XXXX found outside of this area are to be destroyed immediately, and Class-B amnesiacs administered to any witnesses. Any satellite images of SCP-XXXX pits are to be explained as bomb testing, with any ground images of SCP-XXXX pre-containment removed from internet.

Each adult SCP-XXXX instance is to be fed a single 700 kg cow once every year, and sprouts are to be fed appropriately sized non-sentient prey items determined by the size of the individual.

In the event that SCP-XXXX begins to disperse spores, procedure XXXX-Alpha is to be executed, with 5% of the collected spores stored for further analysis and experimentation. Spores not stored for analysis must be incinerated, and the ashes jettisoned into space toward the nearest black hole.

Description: SCP-XXXX was discovered when reports of man-eating pits started to appear in the local media. Upon Foundation investigation, SCP-XXXX was discovered and Class-B amnesiacs were administered to all locals.

SCP-XXXX is a large, carnivorous, plant-like organism that grows to sizes of ███ meters. Despite being in possession of several characteristics found in the class Animalia, such as a nervous system and the capability for sexual reproduction, genetic testing has revealed that SCP-XXXX is actually a member of the kingdom Plantae. The organism shows two distinct genders, with females growing to large sizes and forming pits, while the males attach themselves to the female in a manner similar to the reproductive habits of many deep-sea anglerfish species.

SCP-XXXX resides in large pits, similar to those produced by larvae of the Myrmeleontidae family, but on a much larger scale. SCP-XXXX prefers to consume sentient organisms such as humans, will consume any living animal that falls into its pit, and will also consume cadavers. Research shows that the female instances of SCP-XXXX can slow their digestion process in order to preserve food, and have the ability to keep it alive, to the point where a meal is still living many years after it was captured, and is fully digested after more than ████████ years.

SCP-XXXX has also shown a limited ability to "hunt" using various methods determined typically by the size and age of the individual. Younger instances up to ██ meters in diameter have proven capable of burying themselves completely, then rapidly forming a sinkhole under their prey when it wanders close enough. Older instances, especially ones that have consumed sentient prey in their lifetime, can use a slight mental compulsion to draw in prey, although this compulsion is normally easy to resist, desert travelers suffering from heat stroke and dehydration find resistance more difficult, possibly due to a weak mental state caused by the two conditions.

SCP-XXXX reproduces through spores. Females will release clouds containing spores once every 3-5 years, with the number of spores in each cloud numbering in the millions. It is currently believed that the large number of offspring is to ensure some of the spores survive, as many of them do not. Once in the atmosphere, the spores will drift in the wind until they settle. Despite their low germination rate, the spores are incredibly resilient, and it is theorized that they could withstand conditions found outside of Earth’s atmosphere. Once spores have established themselves, however, they are vulnerable to many environmental factors, and many of the few remaining sprouts perish. There are currently ███ SCP-XXXX instances in Foundation custody, and ███ spore samples from ███ separate dispersal events.

Documents found in the offices of the company known as ████████, a company known to provide props and special effects for movies and films such as "Star Wars", reference something known as "Operation Blue Harvest." Despite being damaged and illegible in some places, the document has shed some light on a possible origin for SCP-XXXX.

Document S-XXXX-12

Dear [scratched out, possibly associate],

Operation Blue Harvest is moving at a slow but steady pace. Despite the increase in spore production, 3/4 [hole in paper] recent sandstorm. Our starter batch is now so large that we have had to start kidnapping the locals to feed to them, as local livestock is no longer sufficient in allowing [large inkblot] feeding. I would like to request another spore shipment from [unknown symbol] for backup if we lose our entire crop. Soon, soon our mission here will be complete, and we can move on to bigger and better things.

Long live the [garbled nonsense]!
